Hi, Im heading to Thailand for the 1st time at the beginning of jan & plan to book my 1st couple of nights accomodation ahead of time to avoid hassle.....Landing in Bangkok & traveling solo so as cliche as it may be want to be on or around khao san road.....Obviously tons of options in the area but can anyone recommend a good place to start out & meet ppl......i'm 24,Cdn & love to see sights & experience the city but also want to do some partying while im at it.....Price not a big deal at this point in my trip but don't wanna spend much more than about $20 a night.....any reccomendations much appreciated.....if u could hit me with a link or e-mail address that'd be great too...

I was in Bangkok in March and stayed at the Baan Dinso Boutique Hostel just 10 min. from KSR. What a find - this place was terrific, so I reviewed it on Tripadvisor. If you want a truly wonderful experience I suggest you try it too. It's more of a personal experience than just a bed - people so kind and generous there. Has anyone stayed at the Sawadee Krungthrep Inn ?

I am attracted to this budget hotel because it is close to an airport express bus stop (see map) which means I can get there with the minimum cost - also it looks a 'quiet' location and convenient to the River 'Bus' services plus walking distance to a number of famous attractions

I haven't used this hotel. I do know that this chain of hotels has been around for a long time in the KSR area, on Sukhumvit Road and in Pattaya. Seems like okay basic accommodation, book a couple days if you want. In any event it will give you a place to head for on your first day and allow you time to find somewhere different if you are not satisfied. Young travelers flock to the KSR area, I am not a kid, my preference is a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area so I can use the Skytrain - no Skytrain stops in Khao San Road area! Lots of hotels in all price ranges on Sukhumvit Road too!
Be aware that if your flight lands real late at night there may be NO Airport Express bus running! Also, for those familiar with the meter taxi sign up desks - that has changed as of October 1. Now the meter taxi sign up desks are on the FIRST floor instead of outside arrivals! (Airport Express bus sign up desk is also on the first floor.)
You have to use the elevator or the moving ramp down. The new meter sign up desks are located in two areas near the curb. The desk (more like podiums) are blue with a big picture of a meter taxi on them with Public Taxi written on it. Like before these desks are in two locations near the curb. Old posts will say that the meter taxi sign up desk is outside arrivals. New location and new looking desks.

Good suggestion on Sukhumvit Road as I am not that young as well.
A fellow traveller advised traffic jams are common, so how much extra time do you advise to return the to airport? flight leaves at 1050am

If you're anywhere near the skytrain, I'd recommend riding that as far east as it goes (I'm assuming that's still Om Nut), and then taking a metered taxi from there (which should take 20-30 minutes, but count on an hour to be on the safe side). Will save you an unknown but significant amount of time where the taxi would be stuck in the slowly moving traffic of Sukhumvit Road.

Yes, the last stop going east is Om Nut. I am departing on a Sunday so traffic should be lighter, but I still plan to give myself some extra time.

Most of the my rides from the Sukhumvit Road area (near Nana Skytrain stop) have taken from around 25 minutes to maybe 45 minutes. It hasn't been too often that it has been 45 minutes. If you gave yourself an hour I think you should be okay. The taxi drivers have a few option like hop on the toll road right away or head down Sukhumvit a bit and cross over to the expressway (free) and still make it to the airport in less than an hour. Early in the morning before 6 a.m. I always head back to the airport by the expressway (not the toll road) and the time is usually 25-30 minutes. No surcharge when heading back to the airport.
