Hi All,
When you speak of North America....do you speak of all three countries, or just the country in the middle?
When is this trip? NA is so big and so varied, the seasons make a BIG difference!
There's a lot to see in between those two places. What do you like to do? Are you into parks, and outdoor activities, or into cities and tourist sites, or arts or what? I can make recommendations, but lets start with what you like to do, or hope to see.
See. Here is the issue with the first time poster...They are just sending out trial balloons....I assume they've read the followups....They were hoping to get answers without effort. This is why I think that there should be a delay of some kind between membership and post.
That said: Have Arbitrary luck on your trip to some Nebulous place between New York and Hawaii. Hope you have an Ambivalent time in some terrific Ambiguous places that fulfill your Undefined expectations.

It appears the poster wants to leave/arrive in two months and then travel for two months--but this is not entirely clear from her original post.
If this is the case, the OP (original poster) needs to realize that it will be snowy and cold in all of Canada and most of the US during this period--so unless you are planning on being indoors most of the time--or want to go to a ski resort, then visiting the southern/western part of the US--or visiting Mexico would be the more pleasant vacation.

I didn't put in many details about the trip as i'm very open as to where we will visit! I suppose if were going to start our trip in New York and work our way West across the States, I'm looking for tips on good spots to visit along the way.
Also looking for the best means of travel, how much money I would need to bring... etc.
We would like to get in some of the famous sites, fabulous cities, adventure activities and we'd also be interested in the history of the country.
We're planning on going July 2010 for two months, so looking forward to the sun...

It's hard to say exactly how much money to bring, if it's no object, bring a lot. If you are on a budget (like most of us), it will make a difference on how you are going to get around and where you can stay. Figure out how much you can spend per day, and then you'll have a no. for figuring out how much you can do.
July and August is summer time here. It'll be warm enough everywhere, so if it were me, I'd take a northly route across the US.
Take in New York, to New Hampshire and Vermont (Hike in the White Mountains), head west across Canada around the north shore of Lake Superior (Check out Pukaswa Nat'l Park and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park in Ontario). Head down the north shore of MN, taking in Temperence River State Park, and Palisade Head (300 ft off of L. Superior) down to Duluth. Head south east to Chicago for a deep dish pizza, and take in the city. Head south to St. Louis for authentic BBQ, Watch the Cardinals play baseball, listen to the blues.
From there you can either go southwest which will be extremely hot, or northwest which will be warm and more pleasant. I'd go north. Go to Yellowstone and check out the geysers, Find a natural hot spring to hike to and soak in in Idaho, Check out Palouse Falls of SE Washington, drive to Portland on the Columbia River Gorge. In Portland, go to Powell's books, and drive the coast south to LA taking in the coast, Big Sur, Redwoods Nat'l Park, San Francisco, Monterrey (for pizza and the aquarium), and maybe a day trip to the channel islands. From LA go to Hawaii, and try and remember everything you've seen.
With such a huge country, I'd recommend finding a region that holds the most allure, pick a central location, and make a lot of day/ overnight trips. Too many people travel, just to say they've been to a spot, but missing everything else along the way.

Thank you so much for all the information you've given me, that trip sounds fantastic, and yeah I think your right in making the point about picking a place that i'm interested in and exploring it rather than just travelling for the sake of being able to say i've travelled to all those places!!
I'm going to sit down with a map tonight and mark out the route you've just given me, it sounds like a fascinating trip to be honest, would love to do it!
