Hi everyone,
€90 pppd just for accommodation? That's plenty. There's numerous hotels in the area just outside Termini station where you get a decent double room (no breakfast) for €75.
hi bentivogli,
sorry to confuse you. 180EURO/day is our daily budget for food and accomodations. I was wondering if this is reasonable considering the price of accomodation + food in Rome? If we take 75EURO for the double room, that leaves us approx 100EURO for food and fares to go around city.
thanks for your reply
Okay. Well, hotels don't really come any cheaper than €75 pn anyway. As a more general remark, while €90 pppd is an adequate budget, being able to spend a bit more doesn't hurt in a city like Rome.
You won't need to spend much on public transport, as virtually everything is within walking distance from virtually everything else. That said, the museums are sort-of expensive: you may want to look into , there's several kinds around. Food and beverages are affordable, but having them (far) away from tourist traps like the Colosseum works miracles for your budget, plus the quality tends to be much higher.

A budget of €90 pppd is reasonable for lodging and food. Lodging will be a big element of the day-to-day budget, and apart from budget hotels, you could also look into staying at B&Bs. They are a number of them cropping up in Rome (and in Paris) and if you're staying for more than 3-4 nights, you could also consider short-term apartment rental (which will give you freedom to do some cooking and therefore money saving in terms of food spending).
As pointed out by bentivogli, in Rome, accommodation around Termini (the main train station) would be reasonably priced, and in this compact city, you can walk virtually everywhere from this area. The website of "Enjoy Rome" has a good listing of sights that you can visit for free (and there are plenty of them), but a quick check today shows that they're currently updating their website and so the listing is not available. You should check back that in a couple of weeks and see if you've any luck with it. Otherwise, I can check the booklet I got from them previously and try to list them for you.
Lodging in Paris would be more expensive than Rome in general, although you will see often there are large lists of budget hotels for around Montmartre area. It is lovely and up the hill (so if you're lucky you'll get a great view too), but just that bit farther away from the central Paris where most sights are concentrated. Nonetheless, with metro, you can travel to the central area easily, spend the day sight seeing, then take another metro back to Montmartre. Unfortunately space is at a premium in Paris so don't be surprised if your double room is literally the size of a double bed plus a little space to walk around... cosy
I stayed in Hotel Novex in Paris, couple of years back, but i just checked the price is still 60Euro for a double room. It is owned by a helpful Chinese couple and very close to the metro station 'Maison Blanche'.
The hotel is reasonable for budget travellers, but " healthy travellers" may face a bit of a problem as the bathrooms are quite small and the toilet seat is right under the wash basin and an oversized guest may find problem in moving around
