greetings,
The best place for those little things you intend to buy is definitely Chatuchak, but this is a weekend market, not a night market. This one is the busiest on Sunday, and easy to reach with public transport.
Besides Chatuchak, you can also visit the night markets around Ko San Road and Patpong. If you return late at night from these markets, your best bet is to take a taxi, cheap and convenient!
If you're staying around the KSR area and you want to go shopping at Siam Square, take a boat along the khlongs, very cheap and you'll get to see another side of Bangkok!
greetings,
we will be in bangkok this coming dec 25 to the 30th. where is the best way to go shopping for souvenirs (miniature tuktuks, dolls of bangkok etc) and other night markets besides chactuchac? is it safe to go shopping late at night in bangkok? what is the best mode of transport to get around in bangkok? this is our first time in thailand.
thankyou
steve
There are a lot of street vendors on Phetchaburi Road (just down from the Skytrain stop at the Asia Hotel) and on Sukhumvit Road not far from the Nana Skytrain stop. You can also use the Skytrain to take you to MBK where you will find lots of stuff and to Chatuchak. The Skytrain is similar to the MRT in Manila, it is cheap and fast - clean too! If your hotel is near the Skytrain route you can use that to get around the city.

Shopping:
Meter taxi cabs are pretty cheap, cheaper than using tuk-tuks. Don't bargain the cost of a taxi ride, paying the meter will be cheaper. From the airport you can get a meter taxi on the first floor at the terminal. Old posts on this forum may say outside arrivals, that changed on Oct. 1. Two people using a meter taxi won't be that much more than two people using the Airport Express bus but at half the time and door to door!
Good luck.
Much of the downtown sidewalks are crowded with street vendors. You never know what items you'll come across. Mondays are not good for sidewalk shopping. The BMA actually enforces the ban on street vending on Mondays.
MBK would be a good one-stop-shop for much of the souvenirs. It's also air conditioned. It is located adjacent to the National Stadium BTS stop.
Chatuchak would be the place with the most stuff. It's open Friday afternoon through Sunday. I prefer Fridays, as it is not so crowded. Chatuchak, aka "JJ", is easily accessed from the Mo Chit BTS (skytrain) stop, or the Kamphaengphet MRT (subway) station.
Suan Lum, aka Lumpini Night Market, is a good place to browse in the evening. Patpong is more crowded and may be considered a bit "sleazy".
greetings,
thankyou for your replies. sir we might as well try the sky train or mtr in bangkok to get around. is it similar to what we have here in manila where we buy tickets on boths unlike in hong kong where they use vending machines for the tickets?
we might consider visiting river kwai. is a day tour ok? where can we get a reasonable price for a guide tour?
thankyou
steve
Shopping in Bangkok is GREAT!!! Out of all the modern shopping centres in Siam, the best is definitely Central world- it is HUGE and has two fantastic department stores in it as well as heaps of designer and other stores in it too. I think it's the largest in Thailand too.
We stayed in Khao San Road (in the Chada Hostel- a great one at 400 per night for a two person fan room) and took the local buses to get everywhere. Best to ask your hotel's reception which buses to catch as there's no signs in English on the buses themselves and not many people can speak basic English. The fares are cheap as hell as well- cheaper than any skyrail or tuk tuks which are rip off merchants.
Many suggested Patpong and Khaosan.... I suggest you to go to Saphan Phut. That's enough for what you want. Not many farang knows or go to Saphan Phut. Mostly locals will go there. Saphan Phut is quite near to Khaosan. You can grab a cab and tell the driver Saphan Phut. You can bargain for cheap price.

For BTS, you might need some coins because they only sell ticket using vending machines. You can change some coins at the counter.
Kanchanaburi can be done in 1 day. Walk along Khaosan Road where you will find a lot of travel agencies.
The MBK Centre is excellent for shopping. And I also totally love the Chatuchak weekend market as well.
And the Pratunam Street Market is also decent as well. The variety isn't quite as good as some other markets, but it's cheaper than the stalls around Khao San Road. You can get there on the number 2 bus from the main street just below Khao San Road.
All you need can be found at Suanlum night market.
For T-shirts MBK is best
FOr Tailor clothes Excelsior
For Jewellery MBK 1st floor dont forget to bargain and avoid tuk tuk shops
For Fakewatches Handbags etc- -Patpong street silomstreet and MBK(hard to negotiate here)
For souvenier -suanlum night market and MBK and Patpong street market at night.
Cheers.
