transiting through Australia or do i need a ETA?

hi there, i am from Malaysia. i am planning to travel to Auckland, New Zealand in mid Jan 2010.

How long would you be in Australia for?

If leaving within 8 hours it looks like you for a transit visa. If it's more than 8 hours, then it looks like you would be eligible to apply for the transit visa () which carries no cost.

The possible issue you face with applying for the transit visa is that you're travelling in mid-January, and we're now at Christmas so the Embassy in Malaysia will be closed for some of the time, and quite possibly have fewer staff than normal when open (e.g. Australian staff going to Australia for Christmas). This could mean a longer processing time, even for the simpler stuff like this.

transit visa (subclass 771) which carries no cost, is a pain in the neck. although it is free, but there is a 10 pages long application form that must be filled. Then i have to submit it to the Australian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

i think i will go with the ETA, which is easier to apply but cost 20 Aussie dollars.

hi there,

i am from singapore and would be doing likewise, flying to australia from singapore via budget airline and then to christchurch. i am not sure if i would require a something like jerrycrow, a transit visa.

this is my first time travelling alone and to the oceania doing the W&H visa, and hope someone can help to shed some light in this area.

i think ETA is much better because it gives me freedom to enter Australia anytime, in 1 years' period. It is convenient and doesnt cost much money. furthermore, the service is pretty fast, just took them 5 to 10 minutes to approve it...
