If you are travelling in September it won't be winter. It will be shoulder season, between summer and fall. September is a great time to visit Europe, especially places like Greece, Croatia, Italy, etc. In most of Europe you'll have nice weather with temps around 20-25 C and sunshine. The Mediterranean will be warm enough for a swim.
Partying will be less, but still going on. Almost everybody goes to Octoberfest in Munich which is from September 18th to October 5th this year. (If you want to go too book accomodation ASAP.)
