customs

right so im off to oz in 10 days, just wondering would customs actually turn me away for not having sufficient funds? ill have around £1800 in my british bank account, 200 australian dollars in my pocket, a £500 wage on the 24th of september and work asoon as i reach cairns (flying to brisbane)? would they just decline me straigh away or will i be take into a office to be evaluated or anything? thanks

You won't be turned away straight away. Australians are known for giving people a fair go however if they suspect that you are involved in dealing drugs and thats got something to do with you having no money, they might be a bit suss. If they are suspicious, you will be taken to a room and they will assess the situation and ask you a number of questions. The main thing they worry about is if you have too much money, not if you don't have much. $200 AU cash won't even be looked into because it's a good amount. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Please be more aware of Australian rules and regulations as they apply to the people visiting this forum before trying to answer questions. The vast majority of people with such questions are asking them because they're coming to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa, which has the requirement of AUD $5000 of available funds to support yourself. Having too little money thus is a reasonable thing to worry about - and all the talk of drugs is completely besides the point.

Anyway, Keraldo: In the last five years, no one on this forum has ever reported being asked to show proof of funds when entering Australia on a WHV, and the same should go for you, so not having enough money shouldn't be an issue. As long as you don't look like a total bum and aren't extremely unlucky to encounter an immigration official having a seriously bad day, you should be fine. Backpackers are considered "low risk" for immigration (as an Australian immigration expert which frequented these forums used to say), and that requirement of sufficient funds is mostly there for your benefit, as most backpackers end up really needing at least that much money.
