Buy or Rent car to travel down the Pacific Coast Highway

I am going travelling in September and want to travel down the Pacific Coast Highway by car from Seattle to San Diego but I'm not sure what is the most cost efficient way to travel. Would it be best to buy a cheap car in Seattle and sell it in San Diego or rent one? If buying is the best option, where would the best place to buy?

Impossible to answer your question when you give no information like your age, nationality, how long the trip will take, etc.

Cheers,
Terry

Very good point CheersT!

Tell us more dude then we can help, im doing the same so i can let you know how it goes ince ive accomplished the task in hand!

Yeah good point! I'm a British male aged 26 and there is no planned time scale for the trip down the PCH. Any information will help greatly!!!

That's a little over 2,000 kilometres. It's a very easy drive through some spectacular country.

When you decide whether you'll take 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months then someone can help you decide between renting and buying. Until then it's a waste of time to speculate.

Have fun.

Terry

Hey hey well im a 24 british female!!!
It will be cheaper to buy a car but you will need an address in america to register it to so unless you own property or have relatives that will allow you to register it at their address, you cant buy a car!!! Also if going into Cali it will of had to pass a smog test!! Which as its one of if not the only state thats needs this test passed buying one in Seattle your not going to find one with a valid cert!
Your better of doing it from San Diego to Seattle because of this.
Also insurance has to be paid monthly and you will need to buy plates for the car, if you inbox me your email i can send you this and more info that a nice american sent me
Its quit in depth and i had to read it a few times to understand it!!!

Its do-able you just need to put the effort in, once the ball is rolling you will be fine

I leave in a week but havent the need to get a car till around May as im going on trips etc
You should register on couchsurfing.org and travbuddy.com as maybe you could find someone to travel with??? Just a suggestion

Hope this helps

I have helped 9 TP members buy vehicles here in Vegas. If your trip is 2 months or less, rent. The problems of buying, insuring and re-selling a vehicle are not worth it unless you are on the road more than 2 months. Good luck.

"... It will be cheaper to buy a car..."

lil_gun_14 @ #6: That's absolutely false unless it's going to be a long, extended trip. Rental is by FAR a cheaper, hassle-free option if the trip is a short one. Until the OPer gives more info regarding time and budget it's a waste of time to speculate.

Terry
