Scotland to Slovakia with a family on a budget

Hello! Anyone with any thoughts about the cheapest and most interesting routes to get our family of 2 adults and 2 children (5 and 7 yrs old) to a wedding in Dolny Kubin, Slovakia? We live near Inverness, so probably looking at flying out of Edinburgh to either Krakow or Bratislava, and maybe onward by train. Might have to rent a car, but would prefer not to. We are going around about Easter Monday for a week. We have freinds there but would like to make the most of visiting this part of Europe which we don't know at all. And we are fairly skint! Help! Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a great trip.
You don't have to go from Edinburgh, although it'll save waiting around for connecting flights onward. You can do Easyjet from Inverness to Luton, then Ryanair from Luton to Bratislava. Try and avoid travel on Easter Monday itself, as the flights tend to be more expensive (always the way).
You should be able to get fares for all four of you for under £500 return.
A more convenient option would be, as you've mentioned - get to Edinburgh somehow and Ryanair do direct flights to Bratislava from there. It won't alter the total cost that much, but will avoid hanging about at Luton and paying out for refreshments at 2nd mortgage prices for all four of you.

Thanks flyingbob, nice of you to reply! I think you are right about not going to Luton! At the moment flights from Ed to Bratislava are quite prices (once you've added up all the charges!) but a friend mentioned that if we wait Ryanair sometimes drop their prices nearer to the time - can anyone confirm that?

No - no - no - no.
The nearer you leave it to your flight date.... The 'More expensive' budget airlines fares become. You get the best last minute deals with national carriers - BA, Lufthansa, KLM etc.
As an example, it's possible to get a BA flight from Inverness to Vienna (they don't fly to Bratislava) tomorrow, for less than if you booked it tomorrow for April 28th.
Risky business though, in case they've only (say) 3 seats left.
On the other hand, a return with Ryanair from Liverpool to Londonderry on April 28th booked tomorrow is around a £20. If you want to go tomorrow - it's £90.... One way ! !
Incidentally, I don't know if you're aware, but Vienna is just a short bus ride from Bratislava and there are many direct train routes from Vienna to different parts of Slovakia. Isn't it fun - organising the cheapest way of getting there, with two adults and two children? Ha ! !

Oh great fun, I did loads of travelling when I was single, but multiplying it all by 4 can be a bit hair-raising. Vienna is agood suggestion. I did look into going the whole way by train but it would certainly be very expensive, but the boys would love a train ride. I check out trains from Vienna. Thanks!
