elephants in africa

this may sound strange, but I am an artist and have heavily focused my work on the african scene and many feature the african elephants, which sells very well. I am thinking of learning the most appropiate or best locations to actually go to so I can experience the environment for myself, and hopefully let this reflect on more of my work. It would also be good to paint actual locations as my work is fictional. I havent mentioned my gallery website as I think i'm not allowed to,but advise on the best locations I can go to would be much appreciated, also any comments on accomadation would be great too, I can look into them too.

Hi Darren

there are numerous places n Africa you can go to witness elephants in their natural surroundings, but it does of course depend on your budget (re accommodation).

For South Africa - there is a place called Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape (which is Malaria free). It has some incredible scenery, over 450 elephants and lots of other species.

There is also an elephant sanctuary in Hazyview, Mpumalanga where you can interact with them which is just superb and in that area there are lots of little guest houses / BB's etc and once again a beautiful part of the country.

If you wanted to go to East Africa then in Tanzania the Selous is very good for seeing elephants. It is renowned internationally for its elephant and rhino populations and there are numerous camps around (but this is getting pricey).

If you wanted Kenya, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a superb project to support and also see them. In the Mara there are stunning views with elephants etc - the backdrop is just gorgeous and Tsavo National Park is home to the "Red Elephants" - once again lots of little lodges etc.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Taryn

Dear Taryn
Thankyou so much for your very useful reply, so much appreciated. It sounds like you have lots of knowledge for those regions, i'm very jealous. I will keep the details and will look into them further at a later stage. Once again, a big thankyou.

Hi Darren,
Should you want to come to South Africa to see the elephants contact us. You should also see the Tsitsikama giants of the forest. Also quite a few places where you can walk with the elephants.
Regards.
Charmaine

Hi there,

You might be able to travel along with a client of ours who knows the African Elephant very well. He's been a hunter, Big 5 guide and expedition leader since the 60's. He can take you into the Southern African countries where 100's of elephant still run wild. You'll be able to see what the public never sees, and hear stories from years of experience of living in the bush.

Hope to hear from you.

Regards

It upsets me to read about people who are boasting about years of hunting our beautifull animals in Africa. What will we hear about next? Someone telling us about their last Rhino kill? Sic!

Hi Charmaine,
The hunter I was mentioning gets called in by governments and reserves to hunt problem animals, lion etc that kill children in villages and animals that are too old to look after themselves anymore and start attacking people, vehicles and damaging other wildlife. Well managed hunting is not poaching, and is necessary.
