This summer I am traveling to Europe for the first time. I'm only staying for a little over a week, but have no idea where to go. I want to see all of Europe but I know with one week I can only pick 1 or 2 places to visit. I want to go somewhere I can marvel at! My main focus is to see and experience European culture, but I'm not sure what countries would be best to visit to see that. I was thinking Turkey or Greece, but I'm not sure if I would get the cultural experience I'm looking for. I have already ruled out the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Baltic States though. Can someone give me any advice on where I should go?
For a first trip, I think Rome or Paris would really give you the "wow" factor, but I also think that Istanbul would be an excellent choice. What about a combination of Amsterdam and Paris with a train connection - these are two of my favorite cities, and they're quite different from each other, but rather close in distance. If you could stretch that week to at least 10 days, you would really benefit. Try to avoid early summer - the most crowding is in late June/early July. (Late spring or early fall would be cheaper and far less crowded too).
Thanks for your help! I actually have family in Amsterdam and was thinking it would be great to do the Holland - France tour. Thanks again for the advice, it's just so overwhelming deciding on a place to go!
I agree with Daawgon in that Rome would be a good choice for a first European trip. It's a place full of History and places of interests. Also, you will be able to enjoy the great Italian food and wines. From Rome you could easily visit Firenze and Venice.
yes, i agree Rome is the good place for travel. You will full enjoy at Rome. In rome there are many beautiful place where you will enjoy and also enjoy the great italian food and wins also.
And the first places that come to my mind are Paris+Amsterdam. With a little piece of royal France (Chateaux de la Loire) or beautiful sea shore (Normandie or Bretagne, look for Le Mont Saint Michelle). I think in summer it will be better.
Rome and Paris are the ideal destinations for a first time traveller in Europe. Enjoy the lovely beaches and the great historical places there. Summer will the best time to visit Europe. Also don't miss the chance to enjoy a ferry ride across the English Channel whilst visiting France or Italy, it is cheap as well as full of fun!

Do not go to Paris or Rome or Amsterdam for your first European cultural experience.
Go East.
Anything in Western - overly touristic -Europe wil be a let down in monumental proportions if you want to see European culture.
Im not saying Paris is a bad city or Amsterdam, but you will only see Americans and Australians. Its a waste of time really. And all these places are over priced and under value. Listen to me please! If you wanna see France, and feel the culture, try a place like Brittany, Dinan, Renne, St Malo, or Nantes. Or Orlean maybe.
Amsterdam is well over rated too. All the above apply and add on the drug factor and you just get idiots running around smirking at naked ladies in windows. It all just feels like a Frat party on a canal.... a smelly canal. Try Rotterdam or The Hague if you want to experience Holland.
If you want Europe you have to go to where it still lives without the tourism prices and tourism Kitsch. Those places that lived under the communist coma.
And why did you rule out the Baltics? This would have been one my first choices/recommendations?
You can try Berlin. Altho this lacks the historic feel.
My choices would be:
Budapest, Bratislava, Tallinn, Vilnius, Most of Poland (except Warsaw), Ukraine, Romania.
Britain is not really considered "Europe" neither is Turkey, but both are great destinations.
