Travelling from NY to Alabama

Hi, I'm travelling across the US in September / October and wondered if anyone had any tips on getting from New York to Alabama? I kind of wanted to see a little bit of the country so thought about hiring a car and driving, but don't know whether that's the best option of getting out of NY. Does anyone know how long it would take me to drive that distance? Or will it just be easier for me to get a train or plane?

Late September early October is usually a good month to travel off season. The scenery should be great with some fall colors. If you don't want to drive, my recommendation is to take the Amtrak trainThe Crescent which routes you from New York City (Penn Station) right into Alabama.

In addition, you can arrange your ticket to lay over on certain stops, like Washington DC (the train stops right next to the US Capitol building and the National Mall.)

Amtrak's website has an interactive atlas feature. For further information and schedules

If you want to drive, it will take at least 16 to 18 hours to get from NYC to north Alabama.
If you want to see anything along the way plan for several days.

Outside of the major cities you will not find much public transportation, so getting around is a problem if you are not driving. Remember that the USA is a big country with a lot of space between cities. And there is more wilderness in North America than in Africa.

Some planning will be necessary to make it a fun trip.

I will try to answer specific questions.
