As soon as you hit the East it gets cheap. So try any of Bratislava Budapest Prague Krakow, those are the nearest major east European cities for Zurich.
But what your interests are Aled ? Cities or country side or a combination? Nightlife, museums, hiking, shopping, sun bathing, what?
And what is your traveling stryle? Allowing a week on a spot and enjoying or moving every other day?
What kind of accommodation you prefer? Hostels, campings, resort hotels, B&Bs...?
Are you open to every kind of transport? Are you willing to compromise time vs cost, for example would you get a 18 hours bus ride in order to save money versus a 1 hour expensive flight?
Do you have a specific budget on mind?
Where is your starting point in Europe? If this is not set yet, what are your options? And what are your options for returning to Iceland?
Share a bit more with us and I am sure you will get more specific advice!

mariha2912: I have no concentrated specific stuff I want to do. I am open on everything I do, I usually just look up a country and see what the main attractions are and see what Id like to do. I'm into most stuff, so a combination of all will be good. Shopping and sunbathing will not be on the list though (haha)
Travelling style is, usually around 4 days or so in each country, longer or shorter depending on if I like the country more.
Id probably staying at Hostels as Id like to meet people while travelling, might be tempted to get a hotel some nights when i need a bit more relaxation time.
18 hour bus ride would be probably bit to much, but I dont mind doing 8 hours + of travelling, used to it being out here in Australia at the moment.
My starting point in Europe is an open book, preferably be a direct flight and cheap, was thinking maybe Edingburgh or Amsterdam, but Edinburugh accomadation is very expensive at this time of year due to the fringe festival.
Ill be returning to the UK not Iceland, my flight back to the UK is already booked from Munich, where Ill be celebrating Oktoberfest.

Late August / early September is a great time to do some hiking in Tatra mountains, Poland, if you are already going to be in Kraków. This depends on your standards though - if you're looking for a cheap hostel with acceptable standards you'll find it AROUND Zakopane, just not in the city itself as its rather expensive and very crowded. It's worth going there even for a weekend. If you're lucky, you will get to see some amazing landscapes
Thanks Marko, that definetley sounds good, ive done a few hikes recently so its definetley something to think about, have you done it yourself?
I am not familiar with Amsterdam or Edinburgh but if you are comfortable with train travel, you could do a loop Netherlands-Germany-Poland-(Slovakia and Czech Republic)-Germany . That said, I would try to think in terms of specific destinations rather than countries, say Warsaw,Gdansk, Torun, Zakopane and Krakow are all in Poland but are very different places.
An other idea would be to spend a week or so in Scotland, then fly to East Europe somewhere before getting the train to Germany, I think Rayan Air flies from Ediburgh to Krakow.

Think your loop sounds like a good plan, although i need to fit Zurich in there somewhere. Is there places that you reccomend that I should definetley go in the countries you have listed?
The man in seat 61 website is a very good one to get some ideas on train schedules, costs etc. I would try to built an itinerary along main train routes with some side trips radiating from said spots.
My experience on Zurich is limited, I used it as a transit point to Neuchâtel once upon a time and I have travel more extensively in Poland on those countries. If Krakow is a must, I would make sure I allow enough days to fit a half day tour of Wieliczka Salt Mines and a good part of a day for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Zakopane is a place I've yet to be, I believe 2 hours away from Krakow.

if you like visiting cities Krakow is a must, however at the end of August it may be still a little crowdy. You may also think about Warsaw that is not only historically interesting, but there is also a lot of events going on, especially at the end of summer. Warsaw is also well connected with many European cities, and if travelling from Berlin, Prague or Vienna you may find bus tickets for even few euros. There is plenty hostels at affordable prices in Krakow and in Warsaw as well. I'll be happy to advise if you decide to visit Poland.
