I've lived in the UK all my life and can say there is so much to see! 6 weeks is a good amount of time, but you won't be able to see everything My family could never afford to go to other countries, so when I was younger we took holidays all over the U.K.
I can highly recommend:
Canterbury - an old city with a beautiful cathedral. Very close to Dover
Bath - an old Roman city with much attractive architecture
The Coastline near Swansea - very nice beaches! (I know that's weird for the U.K.) The Welsh people are super friendly too
Cambridge - THE student town. Good nightlife, an abundance of good pubs and a buzzing atmosphere
The Lake District - incredible place to walk around. Very nice scenery.
York - a small city draped in history. Very much worth a visit
Newcastle - not the most attractive city but lots going on and some really good nightlife!
Snowdonia - there's not many significant mountains in the U.K. to speak of but Mount Snowdon is a lot of fun to experience.
North Norfolk Coastline - My personal favourite as I'm from Norfolk. A really great place to go bird watching (a popular hobby in the U.K.) and some lovely places to walk through great scenery and lined with lovely small towns.

Hi - it depends on your interests. Other things not mentioned by MarcoPolo89 would be: Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the New Forest in Hampshire, Dartmoor in Devon, the Cornish coast, especially Tintagel, more days in London (surely you haven't done everything there!), Oxford (Inspector Morse) as well as Cambridge, Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare's birthplace), a day in Liverpool (home of the Beatles), the Peak District (Last of the Summer Wine), the North Yorkshire Moors (Heartbeat) and the Yorkshire Dales (All Creatures Great and Small), the Lake District, Durham, the Scottish border and Hadrian's Wall, Edinburgh, the Cairngorms. You'll find some great British pubs in most villages along the way. And I always suggest this to visitors to England - if you get the chance, try to get tickets for a Premier League football match - that's an experience that'll live with you for ever!

To experience real Wales I'd suggest staying in Caernarfon for Snowdonia. Pottmeirion architecture village is near there.
Agree with York - perhaps the loveliest English city. Has Bristol been suggested?
The Lake District is, as they say, great. Keswick makes the best base there.
Scotland highlights:
The neolithic sites on Orkney are in my opinion better than Stonehenge; you can do a day tour from John o'groats.
From Oban they run a 3 islands day trip taking you to Mull, Iona and Staffa. Staffa is like the giant's causeway but much better - with a cave of hexagonal lava blockwork.
Glencoe for the mountains.
Speyside if you like whisky - Glenfiddich are near Dufftown and do a great free (I think) tour. Balmoral castle is also near here.
If you are a walker I think the best day trip in Scotland is to take the ferry from Mallaig to the isle of Eigg and walk up the Sgurr of Eigg - a big volcanic plug with views right across the hebrides and the west highlands. I think that works on Monday and Saturdays this coming summer. Getting to Mallaig also takes you past glenfinnan viaduct of Harry Potter film fame - this railway is one of the world's most scenic.
You said tv - if you're a coronation street fan they do tours of the old set just now in Manchester.

I can't help much for England & Wales yet - although I do like Bristol, and keep hearing great things about wales - Tinture Abbey and the Dover coast.
But for Scotland, I second some of the suggestions above - Edinburgh is fantastic, lovely scenery around Fort William and up towards the Loch Ness & Inverness. I've yet to make it as far as Orkney, but it's supposed to be really good. The outer Hebrides & Isle of Skye. William Wallace history around Stirling if you're into that, or check out the Eilean Donan castle for some movie set things. I think the new Outlander show is filmed up there too, although I don't recall the locations. Definitely go to the site for Culloden (it's up near Inverness - site of one of the major battles of the 1746 (?) Jacobite uprising ). If you're doing a few of the islands, there are island ferry passes you can get for different routes that are worth looking into.
