Why not travel over there with a small amount. Then open an account and transfer it electronically over.
I would check if your UK bank has a relationship with an Australian bank. You might be able to use your bank card to get money from ATMs without paying fees. That's at least the case with my german bank who works together with Westpac.
Thanks for all your help guys, i opened a bank account that has a relationship with an Oz one and all my transactions abroad are free! So it worked out quite well in the end!

HSBC . . I think its called the plus account im not sure but just go in and explain and they are really good
