Wow, you are certainly doing an indepth study of NZ.
I am no tourist person, I just live in Auckland (upper part of North Island) and occasionally go for trips around the country.
In my opinion, In general NZ is not marketed very much to its own people.
I know a lot of marketing goes on in Australia & Singapore & UK but we see very little of it here.
The types of tourists I notice are Germans, US, UK Australians & Asian (from many countries- China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan)
As far as lord of the rings goes, it has definitely been beneficial. I often drive through Matamata which has been renamed Hobbiton, as that is where the cave houses in the hill were built.
There are various tours that run to show tourists different bits of lord of the rings scenery all around the country.
Our main tourist spots particularly for organised Japanese tourists remain Auckland, Rotorua Thermal area, Waitomo Glow worm caves, Christchurch and Queenstown.
