Hi all, In July i am moving from England to Worcester MA for at least 5 months.....I dont know to much about the place apart from it being reasonably close to Boston and it having a few universities
Well, Worcester is kind of quiet as large towns go. It has a main central area--and is probably most famous for its 50+ fairly large parks located across the community, and for being the home to a major medical school (Univ of Massachusetts) and engineering school (WPI--Worcester Polytechnic Institute), as well as four other universities (Holy Cross, Assumption, Clark, and Worcester State Univ.) I presume you are going to one of these six.
The major streets are Park Avenue and Main Street--which have a lot of coffeehouses and restaurants--as you will find in many college towns. It is probably more "upscale" than most eastern college towns (which end to sometimes be a bit rundown). Colleges in Massachusetts in general tend to be popular for this reason, since most Massachusetts college towns tend to be a bit more upscale than similar towns in Pennsylvania, or even in New York state. The New England area has always been a big supporter of college education, and for this reason their colleges tend to be popular chioices (and they have some of the better schools overall--for example, Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Williams, Amherst, Middlesbury, and Wellesley are all within about a two hours' drive of Worcester--which is kind of right in the middle of all of these.)
Massachusetts prides itself on being a "commonwealth" rather than referring to itself as a "state". They still have that kind of "snooty" attitude that is partly the reason that this area and New York are constantly competing with each other over everything--sports, culture, economics, etc.

I haven't spent all that much time in Worcester, although I have travelled through on a couple of occasions--the most recent time being when my own son was considering which college to go to (he was accepted at Bentley University--which is about 30 minutes east of Worcester in the town of Waltham, near Boston), but ended up attending a university in Indiana instead.

Thanks for the info "calcruzer" i will be staying near the polytechnic institute and the art museum
I hope you enjoy your time in Worcester--and at WPI;--and I hope you get a chance to see some other parts of the USA when you aren't busy studying.
Cheers, im not actually studying there i will be working.........im hoping to spend a lot of my free time in Boston or NYC
