hi all! planning to make a trip to Thailand early Jan 2010 and was wondering about the chances of staying a nice hotel in bangkok for 2 nights then go down south to Phuket and Krabi I was wondering about the chances of staying 3 nights on the best island they have there. I heard that Lanta is pretty beautiful but the price is kind of high and then will end my trip in Pattaya for fun.... any suggestions ?

What you want to do is possible. After the New Years holidays are over lots of tourists start to head home. I think you will have some hotels with vacancies in January. If you need hotel recommendations you have to put a dollar value or baht value to what you consider a "nice hotel" means. For me "nice" is under 1000 baht with air, private toilet, hot water and TV!
(My advice if you are slightly more adult is to get a hotel near the Skytrain route unless you are a really young then perhaps consider Khao San Road area. No Skytrain in the KSR area though.)
You could stay in Bangkok for a few days then head for Pattaya. When in Pattaya and Bangkok book a hotel for Phuket. You may not want to leave Pattaya for Phuket anyway. Hotels in Pattaya, even during high season, will be cheaper than Phuket and Bangkok! Plus transportation in Pattaya is only 10 baht. If you want to conserve money you have to figure in the price of flying to Phuket too.
To answer your question - is it possible to get a nice place to stay at in Bangkok and Phuket in the middle of January - yes, I think you can! There will be tourists flying into Bangkok on the night before Christmas looking for a hotel without reservations and something usually will show up. It may be more expensive or in an area they don't want but they will most often find a place to stay at.
Good luck.
If you're planning to just turn up in Bangkok though without a hotel booked then I would recommend trying to arrive in the morning. There's loads of hotels in the Khao San Road area, so if you get there around check out time, i.e. around about 11am ish, then you should find somewhere to stay easily enough. By late evening though you might have to try a few more places before you eventually find somewhere. I arrived at about 10pm last year and I tried 7 or 8 hotels before I eventually found a room and it wasn't that great. So try to arrive in the morning if possible. Or pre-book.
And Koh Phi Phi is a nice island you can get to from Krabi. Plenty of decent rooms (although maybe basic depending on your tastes) for 500-1000 Baht per night.
