Hi Chloe,
My adivce is just to go for it. You miss out on too much by not going for it.
I arrive in Bangkok on NYE at 7am. Was due to go with a friend but am now going it alone. Am a bit nervous about it but I have been away alone before and once you get there and you're put in the situation you will be surprised how well you can deal with it.
Not really made a plan yet but dont want to stay in Bangkok for too long. Trying to find some people to meet up with so if you're gonna be around then let me know.

I spent 7 weeks travelling alone in Thailand this past summer- you will LOVE it!!! Let me tell you, there are so many other backpackers/travellers, that you are never really alone unless you choose to be. You will make so many friends, and that will open you up to so many new travel experiences that you wouldn't have really done before.
I was totally scared at first.. being a 19 year old girl travelling through such a foreign place by myself! I couldn't believe how many amazing friends I made, and so quickly! Everybody is just there to be on holiday, and to have fun and see the world, so people are always open to be instant travel buddies. But my best tip to you, is whenever possible, stay in a dormitory because that's where you meet all the other people that are travelling by themselves, and you'll make the most friends that way.
If you go to Southern Thailand (and I really hope you go to Ko Pha Ngan for a full moon party!) stay in a dorm in Haad Rin on Ko Pha Ngan called the Dancing Elephant.. it opened up recently so I don't think it's in Lonely Planet (BTW The new Lonely Planet Thailand is rubbish, stick to the only very slightly outdated 2007 one), but it's fantastic and good fun, I made more friends there than anywhere else and ended up with some rad travel buddies.
Thailand ESPECIALLY (and I've been to all the other countries in the region... also alone.) is very easy to get around, easy to talk to the locals, easy to meet other travellers, it's almost like the entire country is completely set up for your enjoyment and adventures!

Emily - thank you so much for the encouragement and advice! It sounds like you had an amazing time travelling, and I'm happy to say my heart is set on it now and the adventurer in me has won me over!
Dan and Mitchwell - great to hear you'll be in Bangkok too. I was booking my flights today when I discovered my card details have been victim of fraud - argh! But I'm not taking it as a bad omen, and will book my flights asap. Have you planned where you'll be staying in Bangkok yet? If I'm there for NYE I would love to catch up. I only plan to stay in Bangkok for a few days, and then I think I'll head South, or perhaps up to Chaing Mai for a short while. I think talking to other people while I'm there will help me decide. It's so exciting! And really not far off :-) I'm crossing my fingers to book a flight v v soon!

I have been speaking to Dan and we hoping to meet up for new year
I am gong to head south after a few days in Bangkok, see the islands, phuket, krabi for all the beaches, sea, diving etc. You would be more than welcome.
Anyhow, good luck getting something...its not far away at all get away from the snow!!!!!!!!

New card is on it's way - can't travel without my best friend Visa!
I'm looking to fly out on 11th Jan now - so am guessing will miss you guys in Bangkok? Really wish I could have been there for New Year though as it's my birthday at midnight!! I'll stay in Bangkok for a few days, then maybe head North to Chaing Mai for a little while before heading South to the pretty islands and of course, the full moon party on the 30th! Haven't figured out any exact route as I'm all for taking it as it comes, but I think Cambodia and Vietnam are a must at some point. I'll be out there for 6 weeks :-)
Hope all your plans are going well, am definitely for meeting up at some point if our paths cross! I'm ever so slightly terrified about going it alone, but I can't wait!!

Ha totally feel the same Chloe....nervously excited. Am away in a week!!
Am out there for 6 weeks in total too, defo going to Vietnam and hoping for a quick visit to cambodia aswell, if time allows!!

One week, how exciting! Only a few more for me! Angkor Wat in Cambodia just looks amazing, I'll definitely have to fit it in. Keep me updated on your travels - good luck packing and have an awesome time maybe see you in the sunshine soon!
