I have read a lot of posts about visas but I am still quite confused by it all. I am British and myself and my girlfriend are flying into Bangkok, and travelling to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. How long can I stay in each place at each time and I was wondering what visas I need to get before I go? Sorry if this all seems very simple, any help is appreciated!
Brigham,
You will receive a free 30 day entry permit when flying into Suvarnabhumi. If you want more time in Thailand w/o leaving, you can get a free 60 day tourist visa before leaving the UK. Contact your Thai Embassy for full details. You will receive a free 15 day entry permit when you come back into Thailand via land border crossing. Time your entry back into Thailand so that you fly home before your 15 days are up. Or fly back into BKK and get another free 30 days.
Cambodia will sell you a 30 day tourist visa for $20 on arrival. It does not matter if you fly in or go overland, you can pay right at the border. You can extend your visa if necessary, $45 for another 30 days.
Laos will sell you a 30 day visa for $35 when you arrive at either the airport or land border. It can be extended as well once in Laos.
VietNam is the exception. If entering VN overland, you must buy your VN visa before hitting their border. Cheapest, fastest place to buy a VN visa is Phnom Penh. DO NOT buy your VN visa until you know the day you want to enter VN. The clock starts on the date that you put down, not when you actually arrive. You can buy a 30 day single entry, a 3 month visa and/or a multiple entry visa. Decide how long you want to stay in VN and buy the visa that is best for you. If you fly into VN, you can use the 'visa on arrival' system now in place. I talk about my obtaining a VN visa on arrival in my blog; 'Off to SaiGon'. Good luck with your planning.
