I'm heading to Barca for a few days at the start of January, can anyone recommend a cental area/or a particular hotel where we could stay?

No personal recommendations per se, but hopefully the following would be helpful.
Have a look at the TP guide to and scroll down the page for some accommodation listing as per their popularity - the better the rating, that means the most satisfied the past customers have been for these lodgings. It has a mix of hotel, guesthouse, apartment and hostel on the listing. Alternatively, check out the article here
Otherwise, for mostly hostel listing, use and you can always check the rating of the different places in Barcelona, of which there are usually indicator on how well a hostel is rated by the users. Pay particular attention to location rating, as well as cleanliness.

Anywhere along Las Ramblas would be perfect location for being amongst it all, though it can be pricy.
