3 Weeks in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand

Hello friends! I am currently teaching English in South Korea.. My contract finishes in November and I get a free plane ticket home.. I decided to quickly book a flight from Korea to Vietnam and then a month later from Thailand to NYC (Home!).. However, I did not do much research on anything! haha.. I am wondering if the month will be enough time to see all of those countries? I was hoping to cross from Vietnam to Laos.. then down to Cambodia.. then across to Thailand.. all by bus or train! is this possible to do in 4 weeks? or will I be spending most of my vacation on a bus!?! Thanks for the help!

it depends on what kind of traveler you are you could just about do all four in four weeks but it would be a real push i dont always have a great deal of time to travel and therefor like to fit plenty in this is often frowned apon by the travel forums but i would say that if you skip thailand or VN (geographical reasons) that it would be fine if well planed to take in three of the four countrys taking in mostly the main tourist hubs, im about to do VN and cambodia in two weeks hay its all an adventure if you sit in one place the whole time whats the point.

3 wks is barely enough time to see Vietnam by itself. I suppose if you only stop off at the capitals you could make it.

I figured around a week in each country.. get in the famous sights.. get in some partying and beaches.. some food.. call it a sweet adventure.. maybe i should choose 3 countries instead of 4.. ehhh?

It really depends on where you are going to fly into in Vietnam. With the amount of time you have I probably wouldn’t attempt to travel from north to south or visa versa as this will take up too much of your time. If you flying into ho Chi Minh City spend a week in the area then head onto Cambodia for the killing field, Angkor Wat and the Amazing City of Phnom Penh. From here you can make your way across to Ko Chang to catch some sun, beach time and waterfalls before going onto Bangkok and further West to the River Kwai.

If you fly into Hanoi so spend some time seeing Halong bay the hill tribes of Sapa then head into Lao. This country is a lot poorer than the others in S.E Asia and so things take a little more time and the roads are not so good. But the country side is spectacular. Stop at phonsavan to see the plane of jars, Vientiane then onto the beautiful Luang Prabang where you can work with the Mahout tribe where you get to wash elephants in the river. You can also do the gibbon experience where you live in the trees for 3 days... just like a gibbon. You won’t find this on any websites as it is only known locally. You can then head west to Pai, Chiang Mai and get a sleeper train down to Ayutthaya to see the ancient temples, (former capital of Thailand) then onto Bangkok.

Travelling from Lao to Cambodia or vice versa is not that easy and you will not doubt have to travel on a speed boat were the seats are so small you knees are round your head and the noise loud you have to wear crash helmets! Don’t do it unless you have to.

Hope this helps dude, have fun

WOW.. Thanks Rambler1.. I really appreciate the advice! I am actually flying into Han Noi.. I'm thinking the rough itinerary will look a bit like this:

Nov 15th- Fly into Han Noi- While I'm there I'll go to the bay and do some other sights for maybe 3-4 days.. Are there any other nearby cities worth visiting on the way to Laos?

Nov 18th- Cross into Laos.. and spend maybe 6 days.. going through Luang Prahbang.. Making my way to Vang Vieng and then Vientiane.. Finally making my way down the Mekong to Cambodia..

Nov 24th- Get into Cambodia (through land crossings).. and spend 3 days at Ankor Wat.. and then maybe 2 days at Phnom Penh.. Then maybe catch a plane from Phnom Penh to Phuket, Thailand

Dec 1st- Arrive in the Southern Islands of Thailand and party it up with the Full Moon Party and relax on the beach.. before catching my Dec 8th flight in Bangkok..

Any recommendations for things to do along this path? I know it is a hurried trip.. but the main things I want to do is Angkor, Vang Vieng, Full Moon Parties, go to an elephant sanctuary..

I'm a bit confused on travel time by bus or train from country to country.. and how affordable/time consuming it will be..

I would love to get more information on living with the gibbons.. that sounds amazing.. Any advice would be well appreciated.. Cheers

Ben

This is only practical with a private helicopter!
