Doxycyclone

Right, another Maleria thread- Sorry. Im need to work out how much Doxycylone i need to last me 6 months taking as i travel through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Understand it will be quite essential in Cambodia and Laos but not so much in Thai and Nam unless im near the borders. Any one had experience of these horrible pills? Understand they can make you burn easily. Read mixed reports but thought id come here for further advice.

I took them for a while in Vietnam but not in Thailand. I did get sunburn, and they dont mix too well if your drinking lots of alcohol too. Most people I met wasn't taking them tho, I stopped taking them after 3 weeks...

ave a super dooper time

Cheers mate. Thats a shame as I like a drink and I dont want them to effect what I do. Doctor says wear protection sun cream. After your stopped taking them did you take anything else or just keep protected with Deet?

Yeah, i like drinking too, but its not all bad, you might be ok with it...
I was using mosquito repellent (Jungle Formula) most the time... which done the job well, didn't take anything else after i stopped the doxycycline..

But as you said, if your near the borders or far out in rural villages, it may would be wise too to keep popping those lovely capsules! lol

...I took Doxy 5 months while traveling around SE Asia.....I was fine and had no side effects....even with my heavy drinking! My boyfriend had bad heart burn a few days.....i spose it just depends on the person!
I think it also depends on what season you are traveling where....maybe i am paranoid...but didnt fancy getting Malaria...and a fat hospital bill....
Doxy is also good as it can prevent travelers diarrhoea.....i didnt get ill once!

I took doxycycline for 3 months in SE Asia and no side effects. I am fair-sknned and didn't find that I was anymore sensitive than normal to getting burnt. I think doxy has got quite a good reputation and most people don't seem to suffer any side effects, so I'm not sure where you got the idea that they were horrible from - are you thinking of Mefloquine (Lariam)? That's the horrible one!

I used doxy in South America a few years ago. I found the side effects on these to be pretty much nil. I drank copious amounts of alcohol in Brazil and didn't suffer at all. I made sure I used ample sun creams and didn't burn either. It's about adapting I guess so if you don't suit it try to change.

on a side note my wife and I have a heap of doxy left from that trip 07/08. Does it go out of date? Planning a SEA trip next year and if I could use the old pills I would.

Having said that I think I got a 6 months supply for about £20 at a local pharmacy.

Wow 6 months for £20? I was expecting to have to pay a lot more than that. Not sure about then going out of date. Thanks for the advice.

Dan
