First, you have to decide how much money you have in hand to spend.
In India, on an avg. you'll need 2000-2500 INR per day for budget travelling. This includes boarding/lodging & moving from one place to another by train/bus. So, calculate accordingly and first book your to & fro air-tickets.
Rest once you are in India, you can decide but you need to book train tkts in advance. Though there are 'Tatkal' facilities for last minute reservations but they get over fast. If you want to travel by air from one city to another, there's an option of open ticket as well.
Hi Evie, the best thing for you to do would be to check book a broad date range on an airline that gives you a free change. Also, you could look for a fare on an airline that does not charge too much to change dates. www.edreams.com may be helpful. cheers

I am not sure you are talking about a open ticket to fly into India or open tickets on the domestic routes within India ?

When searching online for flights, you'll often find that the cheapest are non-refundable/non-changeable etc. What I tend to do in those cases then is do a new search and pick the slightly higher fares for the same dates/times. Those typically are much more flexible. Sometimes you don't have to do a new search even, for example British Airways website lets you 'upgrade to a flexible ticket' before checking out if I recall correctly. Usually there is still a fee involved with date changes, so it can pay to check what that is before choosing an airline. For example if a BA flight is 50 USD cheaper, but it costs 75USD more to make date changes, or you are only allowed to make one, I would probably choose the slightly more expensive airline. I'm not saying it won't end up being BA by the way; just using that as an example!
Personally I don't think I would book much in advance if travelling to India alone. From what I've seen on these forums there are plenty of travel agents there; at least they are well represented online trying to flog their wares

Jet Airlines are really good.We've traveled with them a few times.They have a huge luggage allowance ( 46kg) and are flexible on return flights.Contact them directly or if you're in the U.K try Southall Travel who I'm sure will be able to help.

The majority of you have suggested that I book a flexible ticket....
let me just clarify exactly what it is that I'm looking to do because I am guessing that some if not most of you have traveled like this before...
I have a set date that I would like to fly into India from the US. From there though I have an open schedule and an open account (until I run out)...I would like to travel in India as well as in the surrounding countries. I am assuming that i would have to fly back to the US from the same country and city that i entered in. is this correct?
If anyone has done something similar to this I would love to know some details...
Did you buy a flexible ticket and change it multiple times?
Did you buy a two way ticket and plan the remainder of the trip within the specific dates. ( i'm someone that hates to have limitations ...and i feel like having a ticket back would be exactly that)
