Which Rucksack?

Hi all. I will be leaving for my gap year in 4 weeks and desperately need to find a rucksack. I am looking for one which is around 85L in size and has a detachable daypack. I have been looking at the Caribee Thunder Bay 85L rucksack but it doesnt seem big enough. The daypack that comes off is a 28L pack so I suppose that only leaves a little under 60L for the main pack itself. Any Help will be much appreciated.

Hi there. My reply isn't about a specific model, but steps back for a moment to think about what kind of luggage you may need. Will you be doing a lot of hiking (as in day-long or multi-day hiking trips with everything you own?) If so, you may want to think not in liters but kilograms. Do you want to (or even more relavent, can you) carry the weight that you can stuff into an 85L rucksack?

If however, you will simply be moving your luggage between busses and hostels and not much else, you may want to opt for a less-than sexy but enormously useful wheeled suitcase. They make suitcases that don't look like your grandma's steamer trunk. And wheels are a blessing if you don't actually need luggage that you can do long distances on your back.

Finally, regardless of the rucksack/suitcase you buy, I encourage you to examine the luggage and do some creative trimming. I cut 1.5kg in excess straps, liners, clips, etc. of a rucksack (that I used for a year in South America) that were totally useless, hung about, got tangled, etc. 1.5kg may not seem like much, but it was that much less weight I had to carry.

I hope this helps and have fun on your gap year!

Hi and thanks for the reply. I wont be doing much hiking really but will be on the move alot! Especially when I get to Oz. I'm gonna keep looking and i'm sure something will come up! Thanks again, Lee.

If you are going to be on the move a lot consider getting a pack that is around 40 liters. If you aren't taking a tent, big winter sleeping bag and enough food for 3 weeks trekking in the wilderness a bag with 40 liters will ample. All you really need to take is 3 bottoms and 3 tops, undies for 5-7 days plus a towel and toothbrush - how much space is this going to take? Not a lot. When your stuff gets dirty you wash.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I ended up buying a deuter futura vario 50+10 and am very happy with it!

I aslo finally decided on a rucksack and bought the Caribee Thunder Bay 85 and am really happy with the quality of it! Leaving in just over a weeks time, lets hope it lasts me for the year!
