Morocco and Mauritania Travel Companion - Nov/Dec 2010

dz has indicated that this thread is about Morocco

I think you might be best advised to avoid the former Western Sahara at the moment.

Laayoune has had some serious civil unrest with several members of the security forces dead. The riots are over but I doubt there's a very happy atmosphere.

If anyone's interested, the Sahari's in Morocco proper seem to be wondering what is the matter with the locals down there, who have massive aid and all sorts of advantages.

I've done the trip you're talking about and, after the sheer delights of northern Morocco, found it utterly underwhelming. Unless you're an overlander and you need to get a vehicle south, I'd fly to Nouakchott

Nouadibou is just dust and rusty ships, by the way. Friends tell me Nouakchott is nice.

By the way, my trip was about three years ago - I'd be interested if anyone who's been down more recently thinks things are better.

Markwillen,

Many thanks for your reply, and for the friendly warning/advice. I have of course been monitoring the situation, and my sense is that the unrest has for the most part settled down in the past few weeks -- though I suppose it could always heat up again with little or no warning. That said, I really prefer not to fly if at all possible, as my goal (if you can call it that) is to make it overland from Morocco to Cairo, and with the Algerian border closed tight, it seems the only way is to head south (quite a ways south!) and then east through central Africa before making my way back up the eastern side of the continent.

It may be a totally crazy plan, and I will of course be sussing out the situation at each stage, but I do at least want to give it my best shot before packing it in and hopping a plane.

I, too, would of course be interested in any info anyone who's been in these parts recently may be able to offer.

Thanks again....
