hey everyone! ive just joined up and want to find out a few thing about traveling before i jump in the deep end and start booking things up. i was going to go traveling round usa with a mate but he isent 100% and i want to book up soon as in feb when plane tiks go on sale for 2012 for better deals etc. i just wanted to know a few things about traveling in usa first though.
I'd do SE Asia for the main reason that you can travel for sabout 3 times longer on your cash than you could in USA, and also asia has much more diversity in cultures/foods/places than usa which you might get bored of it's just big cities most places.

As long as you stay in the major centres there will be hostels available in the US, but it will be more expensive than SEA regardless. You can definitely travel further and for longer in SEA but I think it comes down to what you want to see in terms of both culture and environment. If you're staying in hostels, I'm sure you will meet people either way.
Greyhound is the cheapest way of traveling overland pretty much anywhere in NA by yourself, so you may want to check that out as well.
When are you planning on going? Seasonal work is always an option, whether its on the slopes in the winter (or at a bar on a resort) or fruit picking/camps in the summer in both the US and Aus/NZ. These positions are generally easier to get than just showing up and looking for work anywhere, simply because they are temp. positions anyways.
Most of these are people recommending their own country, which I guess is OK, but nobody really provides a useful answer as to why you should visit the country/place they mention.
What is it you are looking for? Culture, scenery, night-life, wildlife...?
If it were me, with all of Asia to aim for and a month to play with, I would go for South East Asia.

Personally, I would at least have an idea as to where they have seasonal work more available. I haven't worked in the US, but it can never hurt to have something lined up before you go (or at least a rough idea!). It would also give you the opportunity to meet people when you get there. If you decide to go to the US, I might suggest trying the ski resorts around that time of year. Or you could travel until the spring/summer and try for summer camp jobs. Applications for these go out around Jan though just to give you a head's up. They're generally contracts starting as early as mid-June and go until the beginning of September. Ranches are an option as well, although I'm not sure when they hire for seasonal work. And you can always plant trees which starts around April, I believe.
If you're still a student you can check out some international internships as well. I think BUNAC and WAVA might be appropriate, but for these you have to be a student or have proof that you will be a student (ie. acceptance letter).
As far as the night life, it will be fairly expensive in the US and you will get more drinking in in SEA for the same amount of money. You'll also see more obvious cultural differences in SEA. Again though, it really depends on what you want out of the trip.
how difficault is it to find work in usa? bar work?
I'd first look into how difficult it is to find a work visa for the USA. The answer to that should be all the info you need.
Hi,
Your destinations in America are quite widespread. Flying round America can be very expensive, i would suggest arranging your trip so that you take shorter flights and overnight trains and buses. These are availiable, but you must be careful to make sure you book early, as this can become expensive.
In terms of findiong work, firstly make sure you get a visa which allows you to earn money! In looking for a job, I would suggest looking to the big shops and restaurants. New York in particular does not have what you would call 'pubs', they have more restaurants with a bar area. So i would suggest if you have any experience as a waiter, then try the restaurants in New York, and the large shops. Many people working here seemed to be travelling.
I would suggest staying in one of the many hostels New York has. Hostels can be expensive in manhattan, but if you branch out to places such as Chelsea they are cheaper, and you will only be a 20 minute walk into the city. Furthermore, you make many great friends with fellow travellers in hostels, and many provide services such as cheap interenet.
New York has so much to see and do, you'll want to do the touristy things, such as Time Square, Empire state building etc, but New York has a wealth of musuems, I would particularly reccomend the holocaust museum, situated near statton Island.
America is such an amazing place, I concentrated my thread on new york, but the other places you plan to visit are also amazing, the only one i've not been to is New Mexico. In each place you plan to visit, I would say that try to getinvolved in the cultural aspect of the city, rather than just doing traditional tourist activivities.
hope this helps
