Hi, I am interested in selling the car that my wife and i have been traveling around South America in for the last 4 months. It is a green 2002 Lada Niva, 4x4 w/ about 150,000km on the odometer. We are in Ushuaia right now and should be around santiago, Chile by the middle of Feb. The car is in great shape and has run perfectly for us. It is manualy everything, but that just means less to break. The 4x4 has worked great on beaches, through mud, and throughout bolivia. Depending on the kind of gas you use it gets about 50-60 km/gal. The car has Ecuadorian plates and as far as we know they can only be changed into your name in Ecuador, so ideally someone who is interested in driving it back north, or who knows of another less legal way to go about that. We have talked to several people who have said that with a notarized letter saying that the buyer is borrowing the car from us that there wont be any problems crossing borders, and then with a separate set of sale papers the buyer will be able to transfer the matricula into his or her name once they get to Ecuador. We did it in Salinas, Ecuador and it took about 3 hours to jump through all the hoops. Our asking price is 5000$us. but we are willing to negotiate. Most people won't pay that price, that's if you find anyone at all interested.
Ladas (even though it's obviously served you proud) are considered a pretty useless brand - outside of certain parts of Eastern Europe. They are put together very badly and in the UK, to mention just one part of Europe where you hardly see one anymore - spares are not easy to come by.
However, it maybe different in South America.

Well i cant speak for other Ladas but this one has been great for us, and while i realize they don't have an amazing reputation, they also are loved by a lot of people who are willing to check the oil regularly and get the small problems fixed before they become big ones. And as for the price, i defy you to find any 4x4 car (that's running) in South America for cheaper. Ive looked and this is by far the cheapest i've found. Lastly, parts are hard to come by in the outskirts and small pueblos, but they are hard to find for almost everything, but in any decent sized city we have had no problems finding spare parts.
