I am going to australia in august and i was going to go get my visa with visafirst. turns out they rip you off and i can afford for that to happen.
so iv decided to get my visa with the embassy or whatever its called. BUT i havnt got a clue about getting my aussie bank account and tax file number or whatever it was in the visa first package that i needed..
Hey Hannah. I've just come back from oz and hoping to go back in the next few months. If you get your visa at immi.gov.au you can sort your visa out through there. Also it's pretty easy to sort out your bank account when you get there by popping in to any bank, it'll take like 10 mins. And you can sort your tax file number out online when you get there too. Pretty much you can do it all by yourself, I did! I'm not sure about doing it any other way without getting ripped off tbh! Hope you have fun

As Fran says, these things are very easy to do yourself once you're in Australia. Just walk into any bank branch with the first two weeks of arriving in Australia, carrying your passport and $50 for an initial deposit. 10 minutes of filling forms later, you walk out again. Give them the address of your hostel to send your debit card to (takes about a week), and tell them to not send you bank statements (or to set the frequency of sending bank statements to once a year, if they can't do the former).
There's at least one bank out there that allows you to apply while still at home, but you'd still have to enter a bank branch with your passport after arriving, so I don't really see the point of doing that.
You can apply for your Tax File Number through . You can only do this once you're actually in Australia.

Google the Oz Immigration website - I applied on 1st Jan (bank holiday obv) and got an email a few hours later confirming my visa. I would say this is the quickest way - I couldn't believe how fast I got the reply as well as the visa letter with reference number. All legit too.

Yes! Apply online is quicker and easier. Just go on the , follow the direction, and go step by step. That's it!
Open a bank account:
You had better open a bank account during the first week. Then you can deposit most of your money in the bank rather than take them with you all the time. In addition, you may travel a lot after the first or second week so you won’t know where you would be to receive the bank cards.

- You may fill in the hostel address as your contact address. Some may suggest you fill in a post office address instead and you can pick up the bank card yourself. That’s pretty wise and safe. Find the nearest post office around you and ask the staff for address.

Apply for your Tax File Number
It may take 1~2 weeks or even longer. That’s why you should do it as soon as possbile. But if you plan explore this country first rather than find a job, you can apply for your TFN later. You can apply TFN at ATO(Australia Taxation Office) or just . You will receive a letter from ATO showing your TFN. Your TFN is very important so keep it in a safe place and copy it down on your notebook just in case.

hey! im also going oz in august i applied for my visa begining of year and they rang me up the next day and sorted it and they gave me all these things on how to set bank acount up before i go. whats all this tax file number stuff about though? have you booked flights yet?
