What's your favourite place in India?

Hello everyone,

Come on people! I am interested in your opinions and knowledge. Obviously I know all the usual places people say to visit - Golden Triangle, Goa, Kerala etc - but anywhere that stands out for you which is off the beaten track or not quite as popular?

love and 4 kisses in your first post and now nothing! wheres the love?

Himachal Pradesh is certainly one of my favorites. The little village of Manali in the foothills of the Himalaya is awesome, relaxing, and beautiful. If you went south first and did Karala and then worked your way up, you could be in Manali around the end of your trip and the road to Leh in Ladahk would be just about open by then. Ladahk is completely different from anything else in India. Certainly save time for a trip into Rajashtan too. Trouble is there is so much of India and its not a country you can just jump on a bus or even a plane and move on to the next place. Everything takes planning and everything has a 80% chance of going wrong and there being delays.

xxxx!

Hi Emily,

Here are some of my favourites:

1. Leh region: This region has been practically cut off from the rest of the India by the mighty Himalayas and maintains a distinct identity of its own.... Direct flights are available from Delhi to Leh but the best way to reach Leh is by road from Manali passing numerous high mountain passes on the way. Roads normally open in the first week of July. Once u reach Leh, lot of excursions are available..

2. Explore the Hampi, Badami, Aihole, Pattakal and Bijapur area, all these places are close to each other and has so much to see and explore.

3. A visit to Orchha and Khajuraho is a visit for the unique style of temple architecture.. mainly erotic..

4. Darjeeling and Gangtok for its sheer natural beauty..

Do let me know if u need any more info

Cheers
Arif

Not sure what interests you much... cuz India has almost everything...

Up north you can find snow and mountains - Kashmir is gorgeous and Himachal (Kasol, McLeodGanj, Manali are amazing places to relax). North East india also has amaziang scenic beauty.

Delhi, Agra, gaya and central india - You can visti if u like history and architecture... including Taj mahal

West & South India - You can Goa, Kerela and Pondicherry.... amazing places to spend time and every place has a very diff feel..

Rajasthan (North West India) - you can go there for deserts and camels.. am not really fond of that but people love places like udaipur, pushkar, jaiselmer etc)

Religion - Hindu places like varanasi (benaras) and haridwar... they are the most famous.. you have other places like dwarke and tirupati also...

national parks - can also go to various national parks and forests... gir, rajaji, jim corbett, kunchenjunga... etc etc

Last you can go to islands - Andaman and Lakshadweep... they are beautiful...

So 3 months are good enuf for all of it i believe... also try to read stuff about these places.... you ll get to know more...

post again if u need more info...

much love..

I am in the same boat (with an enduring interest in India as a destination). Yesterday, I was able to book transit to Delhi arriving February 28th - departing March 30th.

WHAT WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL LIKELY OCCUR AT THAT TIME IN A 500 MILE RADIUS / 800 KM. RADIUS OF DELHI?

ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS for inexpensive accomodations/hostels both that FIRST night AND ANYWHERE IN THE AREA OF JALANDHAR???

Arrive 04:55, 1 MAR ex. HTR (Heathrow) @ Indira Ghandi, INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Terminal 3.

QUESTION 1: Will I find MASS TRANSIT AVAILABLE THERE at that early hour?

QUESTION 2: Transit directly FROM THE AIRPORT to the MAIN TRAIN STATION?

QUESTION 3: Hope to arrive Jalandhar / Darjeeling with the minimum of changes.

QUESTION 4: APPROX. FARE for couchette to either destination, if available?

QUESTION 5: Not a PRISSY FOREIGNER HERE. What fare class would be considered average for an Indian shopkeeper or small business operator?

QUESTION 6: Will I take a BEATING on U.S.D. currency / travelers cheques IF exchanged at the airport?

TO THE PERSON ORIGINATING THIS POST:b] The palaces of the MOGHUL EMPERORS were described in a Public Broadcasting Service Documentary ( U.S. EQUIVALENT OF THE BBC). [b]Dhjalandar is one of them(?)

The "toy train" narrow gage railway winds its way up the mountain to Dharjeeling, and is described as UNIQUE IN ALL THE WORLD.
