critique my RTW itinerary

Hi guys, planning on having 2 meals a day with random snacks the rest of the time, going overland as much as I can, staying at hostels/dorms all the way through (with the occasional couchsurf), buying food from the markets and making my own meals, eating at cheap end dining places, but I'm not planning on being stingy when it comes to entrance fees to museums/events/sightseeing stuff.

Are you planning to buy RTW tickets? I thought about buying them as well but found out that I could save more $2000+ if I just found tickets on kayak.com instead from say...OneWorld Explorer, Skyteam, etc.

Interesting... Actually I havn't looked at flight costs yet but I assumed it would cost in the ballpark of $3000-4000. I was originally planning on getting RTW tickets but I'm hearing alot of different opinions on whether RTW or individual tickets are cheaper. I'll check out kayak.com though; are there any other sites that are similar to that?

oh right, also, I'll be departing from seattle and coming back to seattle (dunno if that makes a difference)

um, personally i think kayak.com is the best when buying international tickets. however, when you are buying airline tickets in SE Asia you shouldn't use kayak.com, instead buy tickets directly from regional airline companies such as AirAsia and Tiger Airways. SG to Manila costs $50; and KL to SG costs $4.66 :P

I think your daily figures are a bit unrealistic

South Korea (2.5 wks. theres a chance that I'll drop korea for elsewhere if costs can be reduced) (~$55 per day) - quite an expensive country, try 70.
Vietnam (2.5 wks, ~$25 per day) - inflation over 20%, try 45.
Laos (2 wks, ~$20 per day) - try 35.
Thailand (2.5 wks, ~$40 per day) - try 50.
Malaysia (2 wks, ~$25 per day) - quite pricey, try 70.
Nepal (2 wks, ~$20 per day)
India (3 wks, ~$25 per day)

~1-2 months in the middle east:
Jordan (2 wks, ~$50 per day)
Israel (1 wk, ~$55 per day) - quite pricey, try 75.
Turkey (3 wks, ~$50 per day) - more if you stay in Istanbul - twice the price of E. Turkey

~1-2 months in E europe:
Bulgaria (2 wks, ~$40 per day)
Romania (2 wks, ~$45 per day)

Suggest you consider adding Georgia and Armenia to the Middle East - Tbilisi was terrific in every way, and inexpensive, try 50.

Thanks for the budgeting info; I was also really interested in Georgia and Armenia (one reason being, that it's cheaper there) but did not want to backtrack (thought it would cost more overall if I did that too much). Maybe I'll have a second look at those places

The by country

Hi guys, planning on having 2 meals a day with random snacks the rest of the time, going overland as much as I can, staying at hostels/dorms all the way through (with the occasional couchsurf), buying food from the markets and making my own meals, eating at cheap end dining places, but I'm not planning on being stingy when it comes to entrance fees to museums/events/sightseeing stuff.

In general, I'm not looking to see EVERYTHING in each country; I just want to get a feel for it but at the same time I don't want to feel rushed (excluding israel, my next step is picking 3 or so cities/villages in each country to visit). It would also be nice to mainly go to places that in general have a good backpacking "scene"; I would feel waaay under prepared in terms of experience if I went to someplace like armenia/bangladesh/etc.

I'm planning on hopefully doing an approx. 7-8 month RTW trip starting this coming June. total budget = 14k in US dollars.
Leave in the middle of june, come back around the end of january or middle of february:

~4 months in asia:
South Korea (2.5 wks. theres a chance that I'll drop korea for elsewhere if costs can be reduced) (~$55 per day)
Vietnam (2.5 wks, ~$25 per day)
Laos (2 wks, ~$20 per day)
Thailand (2.5 wks, ~$40 per day)
Malaysia (2 wks, ~$25 per day)
Nepal (2 wks, ~$20 per day)
India (3 wks, ~$25 per day)

~1-2 months in the middle east:
Jordan (2 wks, ~$50 per day)
Israel (1 wk, ~$55 per day)
Turkey (3 wks, ~$50 per day)

~1-2 months in E europe:
Bulgaria (2 wks, ~$40 per day)
Romania (2 wks, ~$45 per day)

(~2 wks leeway total. I might just stay in E europe longer with this time.)

total daily spending: ~$7000 to $7500

also, I'm not sure if due to my timing (and weather-wise), it would be better to do this east to west (which I was originally thinking), or west to east.

I'm still trying to figure out the details as to whether this is too many countries for the amount of time I have, whether this is realistic logistically (as I've wanted to reduce backtracking, and was also hoping to travel overland as much as I can in order to reduce costs), and what order would be the easiest in terms of planning/costs. Everything here is still subject to change; please let me know if anyone knows a better route with some tweaking of this one, other countries to visit, etc. I'm generally more interested in history/culture/nature than beaches/resorts/shopping.

... Also, kinda random, but I'm asian (korean). Are there any safety concerns I should be aware of in any of these regions?

Any/all feedback is greatly appreciated; thanks in advance!!

You should increase the number of days for India as it is a vast country!! Do visit the mighty Himalayas.. its inexpensive too!!

Happy Traveling!!
