hello, im 21 from cardiff and i am travelling around south america for 6 months on my own starting in Feburary 2012. I will be starting my trip in Rio for the carnival and then heading down to argentina across to chile and then up through bolivia, peru, ecuador, flying out from columbia. I was wondering whether anyone has done a similar trip and has any advice for me. This is the first solo trip i have done so i am pretty nervous!!

When will u be arriving in Rio? I reside in the US, and Brazilian native. I will be going to Rio as well during carnival (2/16-2/27)
I am not sure how long you plan on staying in Rio, but it is definitely worth staying a little longer than the other places. Please, do not rush in Rio as you will regret. There are so many options beyond carnival. You have the beach, the food, the people, the climate...
Hot spots: Copacabana, Lapa, Ipanema, Leblon, Arpoador
Carnival is a HUGE celebration. I mean, literally. If you do not like and/or are not accustomed to big crowds, I advise to slow down. But it will be a unique experience.
Be aware, upon arriving at the airport to not allow the cab driver quote the fare. Ask him to use the meter instead.
In general, we are happy individuals and want you to feel welcomed.

Have you accommodation booked for the Carnival? Generally it was all booked up months ago. The actual Carnival goes on and on and endlessly on. I found it's repetition mind numbing after a while.
Stay away from Sao Paulo. If you have any trouble in Brazil it will be there.
The biggest problem for tourists in South America is petty theft, especially pick pocketing.
Most of what is worth seeing in South America is in Peru. Consider buying a Lonely Planet guide so you don't miss anything.
Columbia is VERY dangerous in parts.
Consider flying some parts of SA as distances can be great. I was told Lima to Santiago was 30 hours by bus. Flights are cheaper if booked early, and before you arrive in a country. Buy Machu Picchu tickets online beforehand as well as train tickets to get there. Consider using local travel agents.
You'll find lots of other tourists about. You could advertise for travelling companions on this site if that will make you feel more at ease though many like me did it on our own. Just use some common sense, and since you will be away so long, pick up a year's travel insurance. It is not too expensive if you shop around and if nothing else it will give you peace of mind.
hey this is a question for leodollar,
im going to rio in feb for the carnival , then i plan to travel around for three months. is it at all possible to boat from peru to brazil on the amazon? like with cargo ships, or anything really.
