I am an 18 year old female and I will be travelling to Australia by myself next month. I am leaving from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and have stopovers in both San Francisco and LAX. I am not what you would call the most experienced traveller and will be meeting a friend in Melbourne and was wondering if anyone one has advice for me when navigating my way through these big airports. Also, anything I should know for when I arrive in Melbourne? We will be backpacking up the coast, staying in hostels and any advice would be gratly appreciated!

That sounds like a great trip. I am also going travelling for the first time and will be in Sydney from March travelling up to Brisbane.
I would not be worried about navigating the big airports. Airports are usually pretty safe and have heavy security but still be sensible and never leave your belonging unattended. Also, don't panic if you get lost. Don't be afraid to ask people or the Airport staff for directions and advice as that is what they are there for. Just be confident in yourself and you will be fine.
As for when you arrive in Melbourne, I think it is just the usual common sense rules, especially being a female. Never go out or walk around in the evening alone and avoid poorly lit areas if possible. But try not to think too much about the negative stuff you hear about travelling. 95% of the people you will meet will be decent human beings and the chances are that you will have no trouble, but never let your guard down just incase!

I am also travelling to Sydney in April time, this is my first travelling trip which I am going alone.
Do you have any recommendations in terms of work? Also I am booking a flight to sydney and then where i Travel from there I will decide when I am out there. Is it best to book a multi city flight ticket or do you think this is a waste of money?

I am also travelling to aus in april, I plan to go to sydney first and then from there I am thinking of heading to Cairnes around July time. I have nothing exactly planned at the moment I just will be going with the flo. Do you have any plans?

doing the same as you pretty much. but in reverse really! starting in cairns in mid april then making my way down to sydney, then spending a few weeks there i think!
