Many companies sell these starter pack to ease us into our travels, help with bank, medical, tax number and various other things. are they actually worth the money or is it easy enough to take care of it myself?
I've booked a starter package with STA - but it seems it's easy enough to sort yourself. I just like having the reassurance of being able to go back to them for advice/help x
Alright mate I'm going in 2 weeks and I've done it all myself. It's easy enough Id save the money and use it for something else but it's your choice

Very easy to do it all yourself. Still plenty of people who like the hand-holding, and I'm sure the companies providing that are very helpful - but really not necessary.
I'm taking £3,000 which is just over AUD5,000 am in right in thinking that a sufficient amount with another £500 in an English account for a return flight?
Yes, that's "sufficient" per the eligibility requirements of your visa. But it's definitely on the low side for what most backpackers need. On an average backpacker budget (which does not include going out or expensive activities), that amount of money will run out in about two months. Since finding work can take some time, and it'll then take time before you first get paid, that means you'll need to start looking for work almost immediately upon arrival. I tend to recommend people to take at least 50% more (the more the better, really), so they have some solid time to get their bearings and do a bit of travelling first to find someplace they'd like to spend more time at before having to start work.
