I'd recommend to do a little research into a couple of scams going about in Thailand, just so you don't get screwed over. It's a fun country though and lots of great places to see - you'll easily find stuff to do whilst you're over there; many people go without itineraries.

Thailand is stupidly easy. Most countries are now with SmartPhones / Wifi. But thailand hands you everything on a plate.
Hundreds of hostels in BKK, presuming your landing there. I tend to book a hostel for one night pre arrival into said country. That's as far as my planning goes, really. Most hostels Will help you plan your next move or help you site seeing.
I believe over thinking and planning trips is detrimental. Just go with the flow.

I echo what Will__me say's although i would recommend doing research on accommodation i stay at the same places everytime i go back because i know what im getting. As for scams research them i always liked the baby and milk one in Siem Reap, Cambodia haven't seen that one anywhere else.
You should have some sort of minimum preparation just so you don't piss your money away needlessly.
Different airlines and different departure dates means different prices. My preference is to arrive overseas in a new country during the day or at least early evening. This is so you can use cheaper local transportation and make more use of your accommodation since you pay the same if you stay a couple hours or for 12 or more hours.
With some passports if you stay over 30 days in Thailand you will need a visa you pay for - ahead of time! Visit Thailand with one way tickets may cost quite a bit more than having a definite date home and a return ticket. (Some one way flights can cost close to what a round trip costs. As they say, "do the math and compare!") But it depends on what country passport you arrive with. Check your visa requirements for the amount of time you will be in Thailand.
You should know how much per day you have available for hotels and other expenses. Then you can fit your holiday to what you can afford. This means plan a budget out ahead of time.
When you first arrive having a few hotels to head for so you won't have to wander around late at night (with everything of value with you) is a good idea!
Once you are in Thailand you can arrange flights, train rides or bus rides anywhere you want and fits your budget. Thailand has good long distance transportation. Food is cheap unless you choose expensive restaurants, etc. Look over a map of Thailand and realize that Thailand is larger than you may think. So some distance is involved. Do a search for "scams in Thailand" so you are not a victim. Know how to handle money when overseas. When out partying don't get too wasted and lose control of your commonsense and end up in the news back home.
A travel guide could come in handy. Good background history, simple help for getting from one city to another, some have hotel advice and "where" in the city is best to have a hotel.
For many tourists once they are in Thailand they go as the wind blows them. But perhaps ending up back in Bangkok a day or two earlier for the flight home might work out better than flying in at the last minute.
Above piece is a little preachy but if something saves you money, saves you from being scammed, saves you from being rolled by a "friend" you meet overseas or arrested - that can't be too bad!

Thailand is really easy to just go and travel with no plan. It is my preferred way of travel. Sometimes if I arrive in BKK at night I'll book my first night at a hotel around Rambuttri (off Koah San) just to save time, but then I always just figure it out from there.
My method for finding hotels when I arrive in a town: use a guidebook like Lonely Planet. Notice where there is a concentration of a few hotels on one street or area. If the guidebook lists 5, chances are there are actually 10. The ones not in the guidebook will be of the same quality, but cheaper and probably available. I usually check 2 or 3 out and pick the one I like best.
The exception to this rule - if you arrive in a really touristy area, like Phuket at Xmas, or Koh Phagnan during the full moon. I would book in advance or else you may end up spending a fortune on the last hotel left.
Booking onward travel is also really easy. Areas around hotels in every town are full of travel agents - and most hotels will also have one. They can book your buses, trains, boats, tours..everything. But, be warned, many will rip you off if you can. Shop around at 3 or 4 until you get what you feel is a fair price.
For finding restaurants - if you can find a delicious and cheap restaurant in Thailand within 200m from where you are standing, then you are doing something wrong.

Don't stay near the airport. There's just no need since shuttle buses or taxis into town are easy and cheap. About Khao San, I wouldn't recommend staying on the main street - it's way too busy, loud, and expensive. Find a place on the streets around it. That's why I recommend Rambuttri, it's a street parallel to Khao San and if you stay on the end up around the temple it's much quieter, but only a 2 minute walk to the action. There's about 15 hotels that are all about the same - dirt cheap and mostly clean. When I feel like splurging a bit, I say at Rambuttri Village Inn.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport there is cheap rail service that can take you into the city. The Airport Rail Link connects with the Skytrain allowing you to visit more locations in Bangkok. (But not Khao San Road!) There are some hotels you can reach by rail service. Rail service available from 0600 to midnight. Do a Google check on this.
Staying near the airport is only a good idea if you arrive late and have a flight scheduled really early in the morning. Go in the city and get the job done with. Some locations in Bangkok are still lively after midnight.
