I am planning to travel to Medan and I would like to know what are the places to see that avid travellers in this forum would recommend? It will be my first time travelling to Indonesia as well.
Hmm...I've only been to Bali and Lombok in Indonesia, and have no idea about what Medan is good for except that apparently the luggage handlers there are very keen on rummaging through bags...
Actually, there's is nothing to see in Medan, it's only used as a jumping off point to Bukit Lawang (orang utans) and Beratagi (volcano).

Well, maybe the only place that could be of some interest is Lake Toba. It is basically a transit town. Bit further out is Berastagi...more to see, esp the Batak Karo Village.

Where would you suggest I go to since it is a transit point other than seeing Lake Toba. Well, my friend won a ticket to Medan and has invited me to go along - hence I was wondering what are the attractions there.

you can try these places: Medan-Parapat-Danau Toba-Simarjunjung-Brastagi -Medan. Maybe to save time, best to opt for mini buses.. For example, from Medan to Parapat it is about 80,000 rupiahs.It is a better option than the public bus. The mini bus (7 passengers+ driver), will pick u from hotel...The trip will take about 4 and a half hour and the mini will drop you at the pier for the boat to Samosir. you can do the same for the next part of your trip to other places..

How long would you recommend the Medan trip though because with my working schedule, I doubt I can go on leave for such a long time. In the meantime, I shall check out those places that you mentioned in your previous reply.

I am from Singapore ......Medan is also an Great Place in Indonesia.u can Visit many places in medan like Maimoon Palace and Mesjid Raya,Traditional Market of Medan,Dining in the City,Bukit Lawang,White Water Rafting,Berastagi Highland Town and Parapat Danau Toba.. Medan is ok from my perspective- though many travellers say to by pass it.
As the previous poster says there are lots of places to see and things to do.
