hey there I am planning a honenymoon for july 2010. First I wanted to go to southern italy( naples sicily etc) but my future wife came up with an idea of greece. now we re discussing which one fits more to a honneymoon trip.
I've done both quite a few times.
They are quite different in so many ways, but equally wonderful. Athens is a very historical (and huge) city, bit it's also very dirty in many places. It will be heaving with tourists in July, whereas you'll find Southern Italy much quieter.
Most Italians leave for the summer and travel elsewhere, whereas Greece is busy all year round.
Scenery wise, little to choose between the two. The beaches are nice in both regions.
You'll find, generally, that Greece is cheaper.
Incidentally, my family is deciding between the same two destinations for a trip this summer. We were very much split but I think we have decided on a cruise around the Grecian islands. We have been to southern Italy before and while it was beautiful and relaxing, we wanted to have activities to do, which there weren’t too many of. We decided on a cruise because we figured Athens would be too crowded to actually enjoy ourselves and we would get to see more of the country on a boat.
Go to greece - people are awesome, and it's so romantic. But if you go to southern italy - beware of mafia
Sorrento in Italy is beautiful, would be so romantic and there's lost of places to visit from there, for example the Amalfi drive, Capri, Ischia, Naples.
I do love the greek islands too though, hard choice!!!

my mum did greek islands cruise last summer and she loved it. but I am not sure abaout stay in boat for a week . ı also included malta and canary islands as the alternatives. nowadays malta seems to be the most affordable one but I still have a desire about capri and sorrento.
