Whats the easiest way to get to a hotel in Bangkok from the airport.
Easiest and cheapest are not the same. A meter taxi is the easiest. Old posts on this forum may say that the Meter Taxi sign up desk is outside the arrivals hall - that has been changed! As of October 1, the Meter Taxi sign up desks are located on the first floor. There are two areas near the curb where you will find 6 meter taxi desk/podiums. These desks will say Public Taxi and have a picture of a taxi on them with a blue background.
With the meter taxi the ride is door to door. You can reach most hotels in Bangkok in 30 minutes to 45 minutes. The "meter taxi desk" clerk will ask for your hotel destination so have an exact address not just a name. He/she will tell the driver where to go. Meter starts at 35 baht. You pay a 50 baht surcharge plus the meter fare at your hotel. During the ride you may have to pay for toll charges. The price for tolls is clearly marked - probably come to 70 baht total. Have small bills for paying drivers or change a big bill at the first toll plaza. Don't over tip the driver. If you agree to "bargain" the ride you will end up paying more. When you sign up at the meter taxi desk you will be given a slip with the taxi number on it and who to complain to if you have a problem. For a newcomer these taxis are safer than getting one at departures. Keep the receipt for your records or if any problems come up.
Cheaper but for a longer ride, probably an hour at least, are two bus options. Airport Express Bus leaves from the first floor. Two locations - one kiosk inside near door 8 and one outside near the curb. There are several Airport Express bus routes - you select one closest to your hotel and from when you get off you hoof it with your bag. Price is 150 baht per passenger. Two people using a meter taxi is not that much more than the Airport Express bus. (Meter taxi fares covers everyone you can safely stuff in a taxi not per passenger!) NO Airport Express bus after midnight until early morning!
Cheapest is the City Bus for 35 baht. This City Bus leaves from the little bus station at the airport. You have to take a free shuttle bus to that bus station. Wait there for the bus to leave. Figure the bus will take round an hour at least. If you are a newcomer to Bangkok and want to use this bus late at night stick with the meter taxi. I have been on this bus late at night and they sometimes switch to 10 passenger vans (to save gas money.) There is not that much room for big bags on that van! But the price is still 35 baht though. Have small coins and bills available there is no way for the driver to make change.
For the return taxi ride to the airport there is no surcharge of 50 baht. That 50 baht charge compensates the driver for waiting at the airport in line and for having a taxi in better shape than getting one at random. Early in the morning from some places in Bangkok there is not much difference in price for taking the toll road or side highway to the airport except for the toll charge!
Good luck.

It boils down to when you arrive and how much you want to pay for a ride!
When you arrive at the airport change some money over to Thai baht. There are money changers available 24 hours a day coming in and going home for changing your baht back to your home currency. Wait until you get to Thailand to get your best rate for exchanging money.
When you leave the arrivals hall you will be met by lots of touts providing taxi rides and other types of transportation. If you require a limo or larger car you can deal with them but you will pay more. Up to you! Ignore the touts if you want a meter taxi or bus!
In the city if you have a hotel near the Skytrain you will have an easier time getting around the city. Also, when taking meter taxi cabs in the city if you wave a moving taxi over and tell the driver to use the meter (starts at 35 baht) you will pay less than bargaining the fare!!! Taxi cabs waiting (lurking) at hotels and bus stations more often want to bargain the fare and you pay more - ignore the parked taxi cabs and walk out to the curb and wave a moving taxi over!
Have a nice day in the "land of smiles!"
If you're staying at a hotel in the Khao San Road area and travelling alone then I would recommend just catching the airport bus which was 150 Baht last time I was there. The bus stop is well sign posted and you buy the ticket at the desk outside.
Or taxis are technically meant to be about 350 Baht but iheard from someone last time that she couldn't get any taxi drivers to agree to use the meter. I've never had any trouble getting taxis to use the meter though, so if there's 2 or 3 of you arriving then a taxi would be okay but definitely clarify that you're using the meter. And also you used to have to pay the fees for using the highway if you got a taxi, so I presume this will still be the same.
Taxi is the best to every part of the city...
