There's vending machines at all stations; price differs depending on how far you travel, but starts at (iirc) 10 baht, going up to something like 40-50 baht for the longest distance you can travel with them. Only 5 and 10 baht coins are accepted, so make certain you stock up on those (though there's booths giving change at (most?) stations, too). Taxis are much slower and cost more, but of course, they can go to all the parts of town which are not yet in reach of the skytrain.
No idea on the river kwai.

we might as well try the sky train and mtr in bangkok to get around. is it similar to the mrt here in manila where tickets are bought from boths or like in hong kong where there are vending machines for the tickets? how much will it cost from one station to the next? is it cheaper to take the taxi?
if we will visit the river kwai, how much will it cost us for a day tour? we will try to look for a guide tour for the river kwai. what travel agency in bangkok can you suggest with a reasonable price for a guided tour of the river kwai?

It's pretty easy to take the Skytrain. There are automated ticket dispensing machines plus a window to make change at . The Skytrain is also clean and runs pretty good. There is one connection with the subway at Asok.
Meter taxi cabs are not expensive compared to most Western capital cities. Meter starts at 35 baht and is based on time and distance. If you bargain the fare you will pay more than what the meter will be. Wave a moving meter taxi over and tell the driver to use the meter - most of them will do it. Price you pay for a meter taxi is for everyone in the taxi not per passenger. City bus travel is pretty cheap too!
The Bridge on the River Kwai tour is pretty common and easy to get. Just find the nearest travel agency to your hotel and ask them for their list of tours. Prices are pretty good, cheaper than an equivalent tour out of Manila. There are single day tours and overnight tours. There are lots of travel agencies in Bangkok and no real need to find a specific agency. You are free to ask questions and decide later then check with another place. One price I have from an old list of tours has a full day River Kwai tour at 1200 baht. (Leaves around 6 a.m. and returns around 6 p.m.)
