Hi All I know this is a travel forum but at the moment I am weighing up the possibility of taking a job teaching in Kuala Lumpa. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on cost of living? ex-pat communities? or just general information about the area. I would really like to get involved in some outdoor activities such as scuba diving or trecking.
I'd say the cost of living is cheap compared to Western countries. By Asian standards it's sort of not cheap as Thailand, but cheaper than Singapore ... don't know if that's any help!
Beer is quite expensive though, and the night-life isn't that great.
I figured the night life would not be that great, is there much of a tourist presence. Hopefully it woill mean i avoid alcohol for a year and get back into a lot of outdoor activities. They have kind of ground to a halt whilst I have been living in London.
Yeah, you'll see plenty tourists when you're walking round.
KL has a very modern look and the vibe is so different from Bangkok. But now that I am looking back, been there twice, the whole modern city concept is over rated. Especially what I read about BUKID BINTANG, the so called STYLISH, COOL, and Trendy street: IT does look really great, posh and modern... But I don't see the so called COOL PEOPLE in party modes.
I love KL, unfortunately, in the glitz and glamourous streets of Bukid Bintang, a man chase us and we were forced to stay in a restaurant, one of the waiters told us to leave as soon as possible because the managers of the bars are cahooting with that stranger. I had to leave KL rush back to Bangkok, coz everyone in the hostels looked like the stranger (ethnic background), my last room stole my cellphone and has been stealing cash from me, and the receptionist warned me about dorm rooms. Such a beautiful city, unfortunately, great cities breed such low lives, no wonder they had policemen in the middle of that so called trendy streets.
Malaysia, food is great and I think it aint that expensive to live there.

Well it should be cheaper to live there than in a big city in Australia but that also depends on your wages. You can buy beer but it is not cheap compared to Laos and Thailand. You can take a train down to Penang (train station is at Butterworth) and try the nightlife there. Penang is more laid back than KL. I like Penang better than KL mostly because it is cheaper. You can also take the train (or plane or bus) over to Singapore too.
From KL you can also visit the other nearby countries. A train does go all the way from Singapore, through KL to Bangkok if you have the time. Hat Yai is the nearest big Thai City on the train route that some tourists go to. You can go from there to Phuket if you want, about a 7 hour bus ride or continue on the train for 12 hours more.
KL might be an opportunity for you to break the mold of working in your own country. You can take advantage of the location to visit other countries. Living there, buying groceries and cooking our own food, etc. is cheaper than just being a tourist passing through. Some of your fellow expats can advise you where to live and shop at. If you are going to be a teacher you might also check out some of the local expat forums on Malaysia.

Hey, Swept Away. I felt sorry for your experiences in Bukit Bintang, there. Perhaps the restaurant waiters behaviours to treat you are not well trained and caused this bad experiences to you. It is sad to say that most of the thieves or robbers will pay more attention to the foreigners especially if you come from Europe countries because you are not familiar with the areas, I guess. By the way, stay dorm in Malaysia might not so safe compare with European countries. People tend to be greedy.....when they saw your stuffs are more advance in technology compare with them. Just be careful when you are in Bukit bintang area. Actually, the Pavilion was just launched last few years ago, and consider as high end shopping malls. Therefore, some areas in KL is not safe areas as there are lots of robbers.

You could be a English teacher in Malaysia as most of the tuition centre really offered English class to those primary, secondary and adults speaking English lesson. Otherwise, you could log in to www.jobstreet.com.my, and search the job in Kuala Lumpur (KL). It might be helpful for you. beside, it is advantage for you to apply a jobs too if you have your own expertise areas/working experience and education background.

For the record it would be a teaching job at an international school teaching PE. I have lived in London for the last two years so used to living away from Australia. Still debating whether to try living in Asia or extend my visa in England. I have travelled europe pretty extensively now so it would be a great opportunitty to spend a couple of years travelling around Asia.
If you're looking for a base to see a bit of Asia then KL is an excelleny choice as AirAsia has loads of flights from KL all over Asia, and at bargain prices, especially if you book well in advance.
But even booking in advance isn't always necessary to find a bargain. I've just booked a flight from KL to Kuching in Borneo for only£22.82 (including meal, and all extra fees).
