Driving from USA to Chile with a dog

I would like to teach English in Chile, and to get there I'm thinking of driving from the US because I would like to bring my dog with me. Is it possible to bring my dog? Thank you for any advice you can give.

Yes, your dog will be allowed into Chile provided you have all of the appropriate paperwork completed within certain timeframes. These would include health certificates, rabies vaccination certificates and governmental forms. The certificates generated in the US are to be translated into Spanish.

gives the requirements and a link to Servicio Agricola y Ganadero (SAG). I have included the link for the USDA's .

The biggest problem will be having to follow up on all the requirements for each country you will be traveling through on your way. I believe most will have very similar requirements to those of Chile. But, one may require more paperwork and another may require a quarantine period.

Some of these requirements by non-US governments may carry a short timeframe. An example: The certificates should be done 15 days before travel from United States or 10 days if coming from a country other than United States. This should be translated into Spanish.

That alone means you may have to have your dog examined in different places to make sure the certificates are issued within the required period. If you have chosen to drive just because of bringing your dog, flying to Chile would probably prove an easier task over-all. Again, each airline will have their restrictions on their websites. (Usually hidden in the deep dark depths and hard to find.)

What type of dog do you have? Size will make a difference in the airline regulations. If you decide to fly and have problems find the airline info - let me know. I have most of the majors bookmarked from helping others. I can also help find the different countries too, should you want to make the drive.

Isadora's covered it all...but Goddamn that's a long drive, plus a boat trip in the middle. Good luck with that massive undertaking. My hat is off to you.

Getting back into the USA will be even more of a headache with your dog! I love my Jack Russell Terrier like he was my son, but when it comes to travel in the tropics, I leave him home. I once took a dog into Canada for a few days, and getting him back home was not an easy process.

Is the OP aware of the fact that he cannot drive from Panama into Columbia?
