Austrailia versus se asia

I was wondering if anyone can help me out with my delima. I just got back from austraila about a month ago and really want to go back. I even got a holiday working visa for there. But then i was thinkin of maybe goin to se asia and now im all confused. How do you guys think the too place compare? As in scenery, the people, food pretty much everything

Apples and oranges, two completely different continents with their own unique cultures, landscapes, traditions etc to compare the two wouldn't do justice for either.

Just ask yourself what you want from your travel experience and then perhaps you'll have a better idea of where you'd like to go.

As previously said they offer completely different things. If you have a working holiday visa I'd try get some work in Australia for a few months, then perhaps head off to SE Asia.

If I had to choose one I'd definitely do SE Asia. Perhaps this is biased as my everyday life is in Australia, but I get more of a thrill in going to places with different cultures, food, people etc. To me Australia similar to many Western nations and the culture within it is rather homogenous across the whole country. In SE Asia I think there's much more diversity in people, food, culture, history. Australia could only compare with its diverse landscape.

You should also consider several factors ie. expensive vs cheap, relative comfort vs chaotic, Western vs exotic, clean vs gritty, temperate vs tropical. Of course I generalise a bit here but for these Australia tends to be the former and SE Asia is the latter. It really depends on what you like to do and why you want to travel there.

If it's a particularly long trip (eg. longer than 3 months) you might want a mix of both.

To sum it up, I think most of us consider SE Asia to be quite exotic, and most of us consider Australia to be quite friendly, but pretty dull by comparison. I don't mean to step on any Aussie toes, but the country is entirely too much like home (the USA).

I'm living in Australia now for a few months, but I much prefer South East Asia. But as Rugbyjock says they are two completely different areas.

I just think there is so much more to see and do in South East Asia, and of course it is so much cheaper than Australia.

Why not have it both ways and buy a 'round-the-world' ticket that incorporates South-East Asia en route to Australia - you need to break the journey somewhere anyway so..... For example you can stop in Singapore and then work your way up through Malaysia and into Thailand and then from Thailand overland into Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam or with some domestic flights and trains you could go all over. The wildlife and the landscape of Australia can be exotic, but the culture maybe does not offer the mystery and level of stimulation of S E Asia - Australia is familiar in many ways and maybe not very challenging as there is no language barrier for example.
