Travel ideas

hi guys.... i am planning to take 6 months sabbatical next year from April to october 2011.

Well, you say Kenya is your home country. I assume that this means you are of colour? How much do you know about Kenya? Have you had a lot of contact with people from Kenya before?

Quite a number of people with colour get quite a shock when they travel to African countries. Because they look African they are expected to behave according to the social norms. For somebody who has lived elsewhere all hir live this is impossible, bc they social norms are not the same and you simply don't know them.

For somebody who is white it is easy, they are recognised as a tourist and treated accordingly. For somebody who is dark-skinned... Be prepared for some serious misunderstandings. Not that they aren't fun in hindsight and you'll learn so much, but when you are in the situation it can be confusing and disturbing.

I am saying this bc as a white, blonde European who is also a muslim I have "been there, done that" so to speak. In Arab countries and at home in the mosque I am often seen and treated as muslim woman, which in many cases meant that I was supposed to act like a (local) Arab muslim woman. Many muslims from dominantly muslim countries have difficulties discerning between culture and religion.

So when you plan to travel from Cairo to Capetown you should definitely consider that it might be a tad more difficult for you to travel in Africa if you are of colour.

thanks.... will bear that in mind.
