I'm travelling alone in December and want to attend the Christmas party at Haad Rin (Phangan) on the 25th of December. What is the best place at Phangan for meeting some likeminded people who like to party in the days before Christmas?

If you look really hard, you might be able to find a few of these like minded people in that area!
You can try in Haad Rin.. it's where I always stay as a solo traveler. It's one of the few good dorms in Haad Rin.. and dorms are always the easiest spot to meet people. If you don't want to stay there, just amble out onto one of the many beach bars around 10 PM and strike up a conversation with the people getting plastered at the next table over. I have NEVER spent more than a couple hours alone on Ko Pha Ngan, even dead in the middle of low season.. You'll meet some wonderful, like-minded people for sure Have fun!
Or if Dancing Elephant is full there's another hostel just across the road. And there's also a couple of hostels just off the beach (Lunacy Hostel and another one I can't remember the name of). If you're used to staying in hostels though, then the dorms in Haad Rin are probably not quite what you're used to. Some of them are basically just a room with as many matresses squeezed onto the floor as will fit. Dancing Elephant is a bit better, although the upstairs bit is still just a long bamboo two level bunk bed where everyone lies next to each other. But you'll basically just be using the hostel to sleep and probably spending most of your time down the beach.
If you'd prefer your own room then Coral Bungalows is a decent place to meet people. They've got a pool where you can meet other people sitting around by the pool, and it's quite a sociable place in general.
You can also do an island boat tour of Koh Pha Ngan from Haad Rin and the people on the tour usually get talking to each other. Although if you're going to Koh Phi Phi as well at any point then the boat tour there is much better. The Koh Pha Ngan boat tour isn't bad, but you basically just visit a few beaches and do a bit of snorkelling. But they're nice beaches though.

This is Krishna from Bangalore, India. I am planning to visit Koh Phangan for the New year Eve and this is my first time international backpacking....so a li'l tense but excited already ....i was planning on catching a bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then ferry towards Koh Phangan on the 28th Dec 2010, and off on the 2nd Jan evening back to bangkok. No accommodation booked as of yet...after reading above Dancing Elephant Hostel sounds just right!.....I would care a lot for some more advice on the hostels.....Also, I am 26 yrs ,male and i mingle well and like to meet new ppl so anyone caring to hop me in their group, also helps in staying out of trouble . let me know if this works out good..
