darjeeling/west bengal

Hi - we are hoping to visit india for 3 weeks in April. Picked Darjeeling because I thought it might be cooler. We will probably fly into Calcutta and get the train up. We will have our 10 year old son with us. We would really llike to visit a wildlife park while we are there. Can anyone suggest a good one (tigers?) in West Bengal or nearby. Is there enough of interest in that area to keep us busy for 3 weeks? I am quite happy to change all our plans and visit another part of India!!! As I said, I was just worried about pre-monsoon heat! Berni.

You'll easily fill 3 weeks and get a nice pace without too much rushing. Train up to Darjeeling is really nice. There is a toy steam train in Darjeeling that is really fun too. Take it from Darjeeling down to .umm sorry can't remember the next village down, but from there you can take a really nice walk on a side road back to Darjeeling. Its highly unlikely you'd ever see a white tiger in a park. But there is a zoo in Darjeeling that has while tigers. It's a victorian era zoo, so a little sad to see the animals like that. From Darjeeling get the inner land permit and head for Sikkim. Some great hiking and really remote and rustic villages. Gangtok is worth a visit too. I have pictures of the area in my journal.

Hiya, I did a similar trip and time-frame to you, check my , I can echo dodgers comments about things to do, and the only animals I saw were those in the zoo... from memory it took 4 days to get to Darjeeling from Kolkata...

4 days! what did you do walk it? Catch the 7.00pm train out of Calcutta, arriving in Silliguri around 9.00am then shared jeep for about 6 to 7 hours up to Darjeeling.

Thanks everybody. I was kind of thinking of visiting either the Sunderbans wildlife park or Jadalpara up near Darjeeling. Has anyone been to these? Will def look into going to Sikkim although we are planning on spending a few days at Karmi Farm (which is owned by a friend of a friend) and may run out of time. Any more ideas gratefully recieved.

Your quite right dodger, that should of been 4 days from Oz to Darjeeling...
