Was thinking of stopping over in Bangkok on my way to start my 2 years in the UK. I was hoping to see Thailand, laos and possibly cambodia but I only really want to be spending around $US2000 while im there not including flights. Is this realistic? If so how long would I be able to survive on this? I'm not fussed about staying in flash hotels or anything but would probly end up going out most nights. Any advice would be appreciated.

You could probably stretch it to about 6 weeks, but the boozing will definitely suck your money and thus your time down. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the experience of travel and leave the boozing till you get to the Uk and start earning. You can have a great time in all those countries without the need of alcohol, and you wont be treated as a leaper just cause you don't drink.
I agree with Dodger. 6 weeks is about the max you will be able to stay for $2K. I use a $1K USD a month figure as the basic backpacker level. You will be able to find $15/nite rooms in most of the place you will visit. Add another $10/day for food, another $10/day for transport, tours and you are at $1K a month. Most visitors to SEA will spend more than this because they: want a nicer room, drink at night, take more sightseeing tours, eat at better restaurants, etc. 4-6 weeks is realistic IMO with $2K to spend. Booking your trip independently will also help with this budget. Don't get sucked into the travel agents in Bangkok that will sell you a jungle trek in Chiang Mai when you can just as easily book your jungle trek when you arrive in Chiang Mai yourself for a much better price. Make sure you pack your lonely planet and be prepared that border crossings via land into Lao may be a little corrupt so you will sometimes pay over the odds, it is not the end of the world all part of the experience.
Laos is one of the poorest countries in SE Asia and so you will find travel to be slightly harder here but the experience all the better.
As the other two replies states 6 weeks all in should be fine.
