I think starting of in the UK would be better and sounds alot less complicated! To apply for visas just look for that countries government website! Ive just applied for a US visa so i just rang up the US embassy in london!
Other than that im doing pretty much the same just quit my job too! but travelling North America eastwards, then Canada then over to Asia hopefully!!

Others have adviced me to start from London as well - seeing i could get the YMV 'out of the way'. Just not sure how problematic it would be to apply for visas outside of my home country.
Or the other is breeze past SE Asia, just to reach London, and I could always stop over when I fly home.

I would get the WHV over and done with first as well. You can always travel into Europe while you are in the UK and it's probably easier and cheaper to go on weekend trips (considering you wouldn't have to lug all your luggage around with you).
It'll be easier for yourself money wise not to have to budget your trip to make sure that you have enough to live on when you get to London because it's not a cheap place to live, especially if you have no friends or family here that you can stay with while you try and find a place to stay and work.
I don't think you'd have a problem getting visas to other countries from a different country. I have previously applied for a visa to China while I was in Oz using a NZ passport.
I think it'll be less stress going back to Oz via Europe and Asia because on the other end, you know you're going home where you can sponge off your parents/friends while you settle back down and it's a place you are familiar with whereas, London and UK you may not be familiar with and it may be harder to sponge off friends while you are here in the UK.

I think you're right - it does make sense to start in Europe and work way back to Oz via Asia, both in visa and money wise. I was afraid I could spend all my money en route to London and risk of not finding a job...
I was quite adamant in doing the reverse direction purely on assumption that it would be less crowded (more people would be doing Moscow > Beijing, as oppose to the other way). But I guess visa regulations just won't allow me to work out.
I read that you have to be a resident in the UK to apply for Russian visas - would having the WHV qualify me as 'residing' in the UK?
