I travelled the trans mongolian last september from Beijing to Moscow and then on to St petersburg. I stopped at Ulan bator and Irkutsk and it cost me £459 GBP or 540 Euros at todays exchange rate. As far as im aware there is no significant difference in price if you do stops.

Ok thanks but isn't it cheaper to buy your tickets in moscow train station? Does somebody know these prices?

Yes it is cheaper. However the russians are not renowned for their skill in the english language and can be quite unhelpful. Best thing to do if you dont speak russian is to get a russian speaker to write down what ticket you would like to buy, and on what date, time etc, then you can hand this to the ticket seller. I used this technique with success in Irkutsk. The other downside is that depending on what time of year you go, you may find that the train is booked 2 weeks in advance, in which case you'll have to wait around in Moscow or elsewhere which would be expensive as russia is not cheap.I think It costs about 100 euros to book with realrussia.......
I would recommend that you buy a book (If you haven't allready) called the Trans siberian Handbook by Bryn Thomas. It is an excellent book and is far superior to the lonely planet guide version (which everyone that I met on the trip regretted buying, all aggreeing that it was crap). I planned my trans mongolian trip based on info and advice from that book and an excellent website called www.seat61.com

Planning on doing pretty much the same trip next August. As far as I can figure out because the summer trains get booked up so quickly it can be risky hoping to get tickets when you arrive especially if you are caught for time. Im still undecided as to what to do for tickets. Think its grand to get when you arrive as long as you are bit flexible. Bryn Thomas book is really good and goes through prices etc for doing it yourself etc.. Just wondering how are you planning on getting visas done??

realrussia lets you put in all dates and stops and can give a rough price or let you figure out where you could jump off for a day and then overnight on the train.
seat 61 also has a page that guides you through the russian train website which is all in russian but you can use to figure out real prices between stops.
Only starting to figure all this out so be interested to hear any discoveries you make.
