I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where the best places to stay cheaply along the east coast are? Any advice on how to travel cheaply. I'll have about $5000 to start off with. How long do you think that can last me? I also have a WHV so I'm pretty sure I will find work after awhile but I'd like to travel around a bit first before I stay in one place for work.

here's a great way to travel around Australia and meet the locals. Just check out all the options of fantastic free accommodations you have the east coast. I just spent a great time with two lovely family's and they are now friends for life. For someone looking for work this can also be a great opportunity. Remember its not what you know, but who you know! And the people on HelpX if they like you will always know someone that can help you out. Good luck and have fun.
An easy place to start is Sydney, but life is expensive... on the other hand you can meet a lot of people planning to do the same thing as you do. Same for Brisbane, Cairns and the Gold Coast
If you wanna go cheap the best thing would probably be to get a group together and to rent or buy a car to travel around. It gives you a lot of flexibility and you can just travel from job to job while enjoying your time. And with a tent or a mattress you can save the money for accommodation... there are a lot of people selling their cars out there (especially backpackers), but be careful with what you're buying.
After having a look at a few of the cars offered by other backpackers and thanks to my lack of mechanical knowledge I got a car from a licensed dealer where I also got warranties and roadside assistance included. In case I don't want to deal with selling my car after my trip or if I can't sell it they even gave me a buyback guarantee, so I will definitely get some money back afterwards...
How long your budget will last depends on what you will be doing. Clubs & drinks are not cheap down under and there are a lot of over things that will eat up your budget. $500/week should be a realistic budget, but it doesn't include any special tours etc. And don't expect to find a job within a day, so better start looking rather sooner than later...
I found my car on , and a good place to find jobs and other stuff for sale all over Australia is . And of course the easiest way to get to know what's going on: just ask. Australians, other backpackers, in hostels, at tourist informations (almost every little town has one). Especially other backpackers will have the best advice for you, and you can go partying afterwards!
