If I read this correctly you're planning to buy a bike in Mexico.
If that's the case Be Advised a motorcycle will cost you more in Mexico than the USA and your budget is woefully inadequate.

I plan to buy a bike in the USA before crossing the border.

Sadly gasoline and the inevitable repairs aren't provided by volunteers, also don't forget the cost of shipping the bike from Panama to Colombia-and do you plan to just abandon it somewhere?
The more Spanish you speak the lower the cost-to a point anyway-until you get to Brasil anyway.

You must be all too aware of your arrogance in assuming you know everything about my plans, or lack of.
The budget for food and accomodation does not include bike shipping from Panama to Colombia, obviously. Neither does it include the cost of crossing the Amazon river.
I'm not looking for advice on technicalities here. I have a lot of contacts who have done the same thing, have given me a lot of useful information, are happy to advise and will continue to do so.
All I'm looking for is a travel partner or 3.

That sounds like a really cool trip. Kind of like Che Guevera and his friend did- but in reverse. If you are looking for travelling companions, though, you should be a bit more specific about the route. You mentioned crossing the Amazon River... are you planning to travel the Trans-Amazon Highway?
Well, I wish I could go with you, but can't afford the time or money, right now, sadly. In any case, you said "18-39". I'm 40. :-(
It's a bit difficult to be specific because the route is dependant on what kind of problems are going on in each country at the time, weather/road conditions e.t.c.
My basic plan for Mexico is El Paso > Chihuahua > Los Mochis > Mazatlan > Guadalajera > Teotihuacan > Veracruz > Tres Zapotes > Palenque > Chichen Itza zigzagging across the country to get a good feel for all of it, stopping as often as necessary.
then some volunteering on the island of Caye Caulker, Belize.
Then through Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and so on in an anti-clockwise direction, joining the pan american highway in Honduras and following it down to Panama.
Joining a volunteer group for the Galapagos Islands is pretty much the only way I'll be able to afford to see them but it will still cost a few hundred pounds.
In Brazil I intend to cross the Amazon from Belem to Macapa and then the most difficult part, trying to navigate through French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana. I'm also not sure how Venezuela is going to fit in to the plan. Border crossings are a little bit awkward from the east so may have to take a bit of a detour while on the west side of the country.
There were major problems with the drug war in Juarez (necessary to travel through if going from El Paso), violence on a much larger scale than normal which made me consider other entry points. And there's a lot of violence in Guatamala at the moment which may mean avoiding Guatamala city. But everything changes, and I'm happy to adjust plans to suit what people feel comfortable with.

this is something that I have been looking at doing also, although perhaps not all of the route you have set out or for as long.
Im currently in the UK. 29 years old.
